Rietvlei Wetland Reserve, located in Cape Town in the Western Cape, is a kitesurfing spot on a freshwater lake in the heart of a nature reserve. It is easily accessible via the Milnerton Aquatic Club, which offers a nice clubhouse with food and drinks on site. With an unobstructed view of Table Mountain, it is a popular place for beginners due to its flat water and consistent wind, even when the ocean beaches are calm.
The spot also attracts intermediates for freestyle or speed sessions. The atmosphere is relaxed, with locals and learners enjoying the stable conditions. It is a true haven amidst urban neighborhoods, perfect for a kite day without the ocean waves.

The water surface is flat on this freshwater lake, ideal for progressing in kite or wingfoil without the risk of waves. Access is via the Milnerton Aquatic Club, where you prepare the kite on the grass or parking lot before walking to the water. The navigation area is wide and clear, with enough space to take off and land without disturbing others.
The wind often comes side-on or side-shore from the south-east or north-west, thanks to local effects that make it more consistent than at the seaside. You sail in the middle of the vlei, avoiding the banks to not disturb wildlife. Launching is easy everywhere, with no shorebreak, and takeoff is directly from the grassy beach of the club. In case of strong south-east wind, it’s perfect for speed; from the north-west, it remains rideable but more technical.
No influential tide since it’s a closed lake, so conditions remain stable all day. The spot works well even when beaches like Big Bay are off, thanks to these local wind quirks. Plan for a short-term membership at the club for legal access.
