La Franqui is the historic kitesurfing spot in the Mediterranean. Located north of Leucate, between the sea and the lagoon, this iconic beach hosts the Mondial du Vent every year. The setting is spectacular: a vast stretch of sand bordered by cliffs and pine forests, with the Tramontane wind blowing strong and steady. It is a spot that is both technical and magical, perfect for freeride, surfkite, and big air. The atmosphere is sporty and local, with a mix of pros, regulars, and strong wind enthusiasts.

chopThe dominant Tramontane wind (northwest) blows side-offshore at La Franqui, creating a choppy to wavy water surface depending on the wind strength. With an east wind, a side-onshore flow produces small regular waves. The beach is vast, the launch is easy, and the area remains clear. However, the offshore wind requires good control of depowering and upwind riding: the spot is not recommended for beginners in strong Tramontane. On calm days, the sea becomes smooth and fast, ideal for long freeride crossings.
Northwest wind (Tramontane) between 20 and 35 knots. Perfect orientation for experienced riders seeking power and speed.
Water conditions are choppy to wavy depending on the wind strength. The Tramontane creates small tight waves (0.5 to 1.5 m), while the east wind generates a cleaner shorebreak. The spot remains technical but readable. Sandy bottom everywhere, with no rocks.
Very weak currents in the main area. Slight drift to the south in case of strong offshore wind. The sandy bottom and gentle slope ensure stable and predictable navigation.
Riders mainly use 5 to 9 m². On milder days, a 10 m² may suffice. In strong Tramontane, a 6 or 7 m² is ideal.
The Tramontane wind (NW) predominates, blowing between 20 and 40 knots, often in dry but clean gusts. In sea breeze (E/SE), the water turns into a spot for moderate waves, easier and safer. Thermal wind is almost non-existent: here, it is the Tramontane that dictates the rules. The consistency of the wind is exceptional, making La Franqui a top kitesurfing destination in Europe.
Dry and windy Mediterranean climate. The sun shines for more than 300 days a year, with temperatures ranging between 10°C in winter and 30°C in summer. The wind blows strong all year round, particularly from March to October. Rainfall is rare, and the dry air allows for comfortable sailing even in strong winds.

Between 13°C and 22°C depending on the season. Shorty from May, 4/3 mm wetsuit from October to April.
