Dakhla

Dakhla is the mythical spot of African kitesurfing. Located in the extreme south of Morocco, this peninsula lost between ocean and desert houses a huge lagoon, sheltered from the waves and swept by a constant wind. The environment is spectacular: golden dunes, absolute silence, golden light, and turquoise water as far as the eye can see. It is a place where time seems suspended, a true mecca of global kitesurfing. Riders from all over the world come here to seek the perfection of flat, the endless wind, and the timeless atmosphere of this corner of the Sahara. Dakhla is not just a spot, it is a unique experience, between raw nature and modern comfort thanks to the camps set up along the lagoon.

The wind data shown here comes from ERA5 (via Open-Meteo) over 4 years, reprocessed to reflect realistic conditions.
👉 Average wind has been calibrated to avoid the usual underestimation of models.
👉 Gusts have been corrected by a median ratio to avoid unrealistic extreme values.
👉 Each day is summarized by the median wind (P50) observed during useful hours (8am–8pm), then classified into wind ranges.
👉 The weighted mode mixes average wind and gusts to best reflect felt wind.

  • 🟢 10–16 kts: light but sailable wind (especially on foil).
  • 🟡 16–22 kts: ideal range, comfortable conditions for most.
  • 🔴 22–28 kts: strong wind, reserved for experienced riders.
  • 🟣 28+ kts: extreme conditions, committed riding.

Riding conditions

The main lagoon of Dakhla offers an immense and ultra-flat water surface, ideal for freestyle, freeride, or teaching. At high tide, the entire lagoon is navigable, with a uniform depth and perfectly laminar wind. At low tide, some areas become shallow or are exposed, but riders can still enjoy a large navigable area on the north side. The wind, blowing from the north-northeast, is constant, dry, and clean. The launch is directly from the beach of the camps, on a sandy bottom without danger. The conditions are suitable for all levels, from beginner to pro, with high-level supervision provided by the many local schools.

Wind side-shore from north to northeast, between 18 and 25 knots, warm, dry, and ultra-consistent. It is one of the most consistent winds in the world for kitesurfing.

Sea state

Water conditions are ultra-flat at high tide, flat to light choppy at low tide. No waves or annoying chop in the lagoon. Wave enthusiasts can head to Pointe d’Or or Lassarga located a few kilometers away to surf the Atlantic breaks.

Sea currents

Weak to nonexistent currents in the lagoon. The water is perfectly flat and without drift. No particular risk of outgoing current. In open sea, the Atlantic swell can create a drift to the south, but this does not affect the lagoon.

Recommended kite size

Riders mainly use 7 to 10 m² kites. Lighter riders can use 6 m² kites all day. The wind remains stable and predictable, without sudden variations.

Weather & wind

The dominant wind comes from the north to northeast, side-shore and consistent. It blows between 15 and 25 knots almost every day, with peaks of 30 knots in summer. The flow is laminar, without gusts, making navigation incredibly smooth and predictable. The wind establishes itself by late morning and lasts until sunset. Even in winter, Dakhla remains windy several days a week.

Climate

Desert climate tempered by the ocean, with sunshine more than 330 days a year. Temperatures range between 22°C and 30°C during the day, with cool nights around 17°C. Rain is virtually nonexistent. The wind blows regularly throughout the year, but the period from April to October offers the best consistency. Thanks to the sea breeze, the heat remains bearable even in the height of summer.

Depth

Between 0.5 and 1.5 meters depending on the tide. You can stand in most of the lagoon.

Water temperature

Between 20°C and 23°C all year round. A shorty is sufficient in summer, a thin wetsuit (3/2) is recommended in winter due to the constant wind.
