Dakhla

The Secret Spot of Dakhla lives up to its name. Hidden between the main lagoon and the White Dune, it offers a wild, calm, and perfectly preserved environment. Here, there are no camps or crowds: just the desert, silence, and a body of water of pure blue. It is an ideal place for independent riders looking for an isolated spot, where riding is experienced in communion with nature. The constant wind, the view of the dunes, and the complete absence of noise pollution make it a little paradise lost in the middle of the Sahara.

The wind data shown here comes from ERA5 (via Open-Meteo) over 4 years, reprocessed to reflect realistic conditions.
👉 Average wind has been calibrated to avoid the usual underestimation of models.
👉 Gusts have been corrected by a median ratio to avoid unrealistic extreme values.
👉 Each day is summarized by the median wind (P50) observed during useful hours (8am–8pm), then classified into wind ranges.
👉 The weighted mode mixes average wind and gusts to best reflect felt wind.

  • 🟢 10–16 kts: light but sailable wind (especially on foil).
  • 🟡 16–22 kts: ideal range, comfortable conditions for most.
  • 🔴 22–28 kts: strong wind, reserved for experienced riders.
  • 🟣 28+ kts: extreme conditions, committed riding.

Riding conditions

The Secret Spot offers a flat to slightly choppy water surface, perfect for freeride and freestyle. The navigable space depends on the tide: at high tide, the surface is immense and the wind perfectly laminar; at low tide, some areas become shallow or are exposed. The wind comes side-onshore from the northeast, steady and dry, without gusts. The sandy bottom and absence of obstacles allow for confident navigation. It is a spot that combines freedom, stability, and serenity.

NEdominant

Wind side-onshore from north to northeast, between 17 and 25 knots, warm, clean, and steady. Perfect for freeride and long sessions in absolute calm.

Sea state

Water conditions are flat to slightly choppy depending on the tide. At high tide, the water becomes perfectly smooth, ideal for freestyle. At low tide, small rides form on the exposed sand. The water remains clean, warm, and clear. The sandy bottom ensures safe navigation.

Sea currents

Almost non-existent currents, with a very slight drift to the south at high tide. The water remains calm and safe, with no surf or outgoing current. Ideal for long sessions without notable drift.

Recommended kite size

The majority of riders use kites of 7 to 10 m². Lighter riders can go down to 6 m², and heavier riders will prefer a 10 or 11 m² for lighter winds in the morning.

Weather & wind

The dominant wind blows from the north to northeast, between 17 and 25 knots, almost every day. It establishes itself in the late morning, reinforced by a local thermal effect, and remains stable until the end of the day. The side-onshore orientation makes the spot very safe. The wind is dry, clean, and constant, true to Dakhla's reputation.

Climate

Desert climate tempered by the ocean. Ubiquitous sun, low humidity, and temperatures ranging between 22°C and 30°C during the day. At night, the thermometer drops to around 17°C. The constant winds ensure ideal thermal comfort even in the height of summer. From March to November, kitesurfing is almost daily. The sky is exceptionally clear, typical of the Sahara.

Depth

Between 0.5 and 1.5 meters depending on the tide. You can stand in a large part of the spot at high tide.

Water temperature

Between 20°C and 23°C all year round. A shorty is sufficient from April to October, a thin wetsuit (3/2) is recommended in winter.
