Sète

Pont Levis in Sète, on the Thau Lagoon in Occitanie, is a reference spot for kitesurfing. It offers a vast and often very flat water surface, ideal for progressing or riding all year round.

Access is via a short hike along the dike, which keeps the place authentic despite its growing popularity among locals and schools like Thau Kite Club.

The spot is appealing for its exceptional flatness and possibilities for long distances towards Mèze or Marseillan, with a friendly atmosphere during the week.

The wind data shown here comes from ERA5 (via Open-Meteo) over 4 years, reprocessed to reflect realistic conditions.
👉 Average wind has been calibrated to avoid the usual underestimation of models.
👉 Gusts have been corrected by a median ratio to avoid unrealistic extreme values.
👉 Each day is summarized by the median wind (P50) observed during useful hours (8am–8pm), then classified into wind ranges.
👉 The weighted mode mixes average wind and gusts to best reflect felt wind.

  • 🟢 10–16 kts: light but sailable wind (especially on foil).
  • 🟡 16–22 kts: ideal range, comfortable conditions for most.
  • 🔴 22–28 kts: strong wind, reserved for experienced riders.
  • 🟣 28+ kts: extreme conditions, committed riding.

Riding conditions

The spot mainly works with the north-west tramontane, which comes in side-on relative to the south-facing launch area. This orientation offers steady and powerful wind, but can sometimes be gusty at the beginning of the season or on the first days of mistral.

The official kite area measures about 500 meters, located on the deep side of the lagoon opposite the launch area. Kites are launched and landed one after the other in this small technical area, so arrive early especially on weekends or during high season when it is crowded. The water entry is from the sandbank in front, super flat with a maximum of 1 meter of water between the shore and the bank.

For surfkiting or foiling, leave the lagoon to the south of the launch area to reach the lagoon to the north: there, the chop is formed, with more depth and sometimes small waves in strong wind. Tides have little influence on the main water surface which remains shallow, but check the coefficients for the outer areas. Avoid the space between the parking lot and the launch area, prohibited for kites, and do not launch from the parking reserved for windsurfers.

Ideal conditions are with the north-west tramontane at 20-35 knots, side-on, for perfect flatness and power. Avoid too much onshore wind from the south which makes the spot unusable.

Sea state

The water surface is mostly flat in the official area, with light chop sometimes. To the north, outside the lagoon, it becomes choppy with small waves in strong winds, ideal for foiling or surfkiting. The water remains shallow over a large area, making it safe for all levels.

Sea currents

Currents are generally weak in the lagoon due to its confinement, but they can intensify near the channels or when exiting towards the open lagoon. Tides are moderate, with amplitudes of 0.35 to 0.51 m, having little influence on the main navigation but should be monitored in deeper areas.

Recommended kite size

Opt for sizes of 9 to 11 m² in light to moderate wind, and go down to 7-9 m² when the tramontane blows strong over 25 knots. Adjust according to your weight and level for this powerful spot.

Weather & wind

The dominant wind is the north-west tramontane, which blows strong and steady, often exceeding 20-30 knots in season. It is side-on at the beach, perfect for freestyle or progression, but can be gusty at the start. The whole year is viable according to the data, with a high score of 75/100.

Climate

The Mediterranean climate of the Thau Lagoon is mild all year round, with spring temperatures around 15-20°C and summer temperatures exceeding 30°C during the day. Mild winters make navigation easy even in December, while summer brings heat but also more tourist traffic.

Depth

The depth is gradual with a mostly sandy and shallow bottom. You can stand up to 50 meters or more in the lagoon, and it deepens quickly outside the area to the north.

Water temperature

The water in the lagoon remains temperate: around 12-15°C in winter and spring, 20-25°C in summer. A 4/3 wetsuit is sufficient outside the summer season.
