France · Bretagne
The Barre d'Étel is an iconic spot at the mouth of the Étel ria, between Erdeven and Étel in Brittany. This underwater sandbank forms a formidable bar that attracts kitesurfers despite the challenges. It is easily accessible with a short walk from the village of Étel.
It is a popular place for its consistent wind in season and its varied conditions, from flat to small waves. Locals frequent it mainly in winter, such as during the February holidays.
The spot offers a wild setting with the beach facing the ocean, perfect for dynamic sessions.

The spot at Barre d'Étel works well with a side-on to side-shore wind coming from the northwest or west, which is the dominant direction in southern Brittany. The water state is generally flat to choppy in the heart of the bar, but transitions to small to medium waves when the swell rises, especially at high tide where the bar breaks harder. Launching is done directly from the sandy beach, with a wide and clear take-off area facing the mouth.
The navigation area extends along the bar, staying vigilant on the sides to avoid the ria and the rough ocean. At low tide, the shallow water allows for jumps and freestyle on flat ground, while at high tide, the waves offer wave riding. Be cautious of shifting sandbanks that make the bar unpredictable; the current from the ria can push out to sea or inland depending on the tide.
Local feature: the proximity of the seawater pool and the Ré cove for flat sessions in case of too rough conditions at the bar. Always check the tides as they completely transform the spot.
