The beach of Mayotte, located on the northern lake of Biscarrosse in the Landes, is surrounded by pine trees and offers a calm setting for kitesurfing. It is a popular spot for schools due to its freshwater and easy access from the camping parking lot. Riders come here for the relaxed atmosphere and the proximity to the Landes forest.
Open mainly from April to October, it attracts beginners and intermediates thanks to its stable water surface. In summer, a dedicated kite area is marked, and the H2O school offers courses throughout the season.
Surrounded by greenery, the beach remains peaceful even in strong winds, with clear water inviting long navigation.
The wind data shown here comes from ERA5 (via Open-Meteo) over 4 years, reprocessed to reflect realistic conditions.
👉 Average wind has been calibrated to avoid the usual underestimation of models.
👉 Gusts have been corrected by a median ratio to avoid unrealistic extreme values.
👉 Each day is summarized by the median wind (P50) observed during useful hours (8am–8pm), then classified into wind ranges.
👉 The weighted mode mixes average wind and gusts to best reflect felt wind.
The spot works well with winds from southwest, west, northwest, and west-north, often side-on or side-shore relative to the north-south oriented beach, allowing for stable sessions without too much drift. The freshwater of the lake remains flat with no waves or tide, ideal for progressing in freestyle or foil. The navigation area is marked by yellow buoys, especially in summer; avoid the northern cove prohibited for kiting.
Launching is done directly from the sandy beach, with a narrow launch area: prefer to launch in the water for more safety. For the foil, walk 10 minutes in shallow water before finding enough depth. Go well upwind as the port channel is downwind to the right, and the small sandbank quickly causes loss of footing. During the summer period from June 1 to August 31, the spot is reserved for kitesurfing in a dedicated area.
The ideal conditions are side-on winds of 12 to 20 knots from the southwest or west, with a flat water surface for clean jibes and freestyle.
The water is calm and flat with no waves, featuring high transparency in summer. It warms up quickly in season, remaining pleasant even in cool winds.
No tide on this freshwater lake, so no tidal current. The current remains weak except near the port channel where it can accelerate, especially when going upwind.
Opt for sizes from 9 to 12 m² on average, smaller in gusts or for strapless, and up to 14 m² in light winds.
The winds are consistent year-round, blowing mainly from the southwest to northwest with strengths of 10 to 25 knots. There is no specific local name, but the summer thermal regime enhances the sea breezes.
The Landes climate is mild oceanic, with pleasant temperatures year-round: around 10-15°C in winter and 20-30°C in summer. The dry seasons dominate from May to October, perfect for kiting, while winter remains navigable due to regular winds.
The depth is gradual with a sandy bottom. You can stand for a long time, up to about 50 meters from the shore, ideal for safe falls.
The freshwater of the lake reaches 20-25°C in summer, around 12-15°C in spring and autumn, and 8-12°C in winter.
