Informations utiles
The Playa El Caracol spot in Dorado works well with NE, ENE, or E winds, which arrive side-onshore on this exposed north beach. The constant trade wind ensures good consistency, especially after 10 AM. The launch area is sandy and easily accessible from the public beach or the resort, with self-launch possible via the palm trees if you bring your anchor.
The inner bay protected by an outer reef offers a flat to chop water state ideal for freeride and beginners, while the outer reef generates small waves or medium waves depending on the tide and swell. At high tide or coming tide, the navigable space expands and conditions become smoother. Prefer the left side of the public beach to minimize walking and explore downwind, avoiding the omnipresent wind shadow.
The resort provides the cleanest wind but requires a long walk without on-site accommodation; the central section allows for quick launching. There is little boat traffic, but be cautious on weekends with jet skis. Perfect for alternating flatwater and waves in the same session.
Ideal conditions are NE to ENE winds of 15-25 knots, side-onshore, with high tide for optimal water conditions and little chop.
The water state varies from flat in the inner bay to chop or medium waves on the reef, depending on the tide and swell. The bottom is sandy and shallow, perfect for progressing safely.
Currents are generally weak in the protected bay but can intensify near the mangrove channels or the outer reef. Tides influence the navigable space, with high tide recommended for more comfort.
Opt for kite sizes of 9 to 12 m² in classic trade wind of 12-20 knots; go down to 7-9 m² if it picks up beyond 20 knots.
The wind regime is dominated by trade winds from NE and ENE, blowing regularly at 12-20 knots. The wind often picks up after 10 AM, perfect for combining morning surfing and afternoon kitesurfing.
Direction E is also possible, with a nearly year-round consistent strength on the north coast.
Puerto Rico enjoys a warm tropical climate year-round, with average temperatures around 25-30°C. The dry season from December to April is ideal for kitesurfing, while the rainy season from May to November brings more humidity but remains manageable.
The best months are January, February, March, April, May, June, July, and December, with reliable wind and few storms.
