Wijk aan Zee Strand is a kitesurfing spot located on the northern coast of North Holland, facing the North Sea. It is a popular place for riders due to its wide sandy beach and ocean conditions.
The spot is divided into two main areas: near the pier of IJmuiden, calmer and suitable for beginners, and near the bunker, more turbulent with a marked shorebreak for advanced riders. An area is reserved for surfers, separated by white poles.
With a school and beach clubs like Aloha or Breez nearby, access is easy and the atmosphere is friendly.

chopThe spot works well with winds from W, NW, SW, arriving side-on or side-shore relative to the northwest-facing beach. Near the pier of IJmuiden, the wave protection creates a more calm water surface up to 200m from the shore, ideal for launching and taking off for beginners and intermediates.
Towards the bunker to the north, conditions are more onshore and choppy with a strong shorebreak and regular waves averaging 1.5m, perfect for jumps and wave riding. The navigation area is marked: stay between the white poles and the pier for kiters, avoid zone 1 to the south reserved for bathers and surfers.
Launching takes place on the wide sand, with paid parking 2 minutes on foot. Sessions are possible year-round, but be vigilant about the strict zoning from May to September.
The ideal conditions are winds of 15-25 kts from W or NW, side-shore, for fun wave sessions without too much shorebreak.
The water surface is choppy and wavy, with small to medium waves (1-1.5m) protected near the pier and more consistent towards the bunker. Intense shorebreak to the north, sandy bottom with shells.
There is always a strong current from south to north along the coast, amplified by the tide. The pier mitigates the current a bit near IJmuiden, but stay vigilant as it can drift quickly out of the area.
Opt for sizes of 9 to 11m² in medium wind of 15-20 kts, and 7-9m² for stronger days around 23 kts and above.
The prevailing wind comes from the Southwest to West-Northwest, often between 15 and 25 kts, with stronger gusts near the bunker. This is a typical regime for the Dutch coast, reliable in winter and spring.
The oceanic climate of the North Sea offers cool temperatures, around 8-10°C in winter and up to 18-20°C in summer. The best months for kitesurfing are April, January, February, March, and December, with consistent wind.
Prepare a full wetsuit year-round, as the water remains cold and the wind refreshing.

The water is cold: 5-8°C in winter (Jan-Feb), 10-14°C in spring (Mar-Apr), and 16-18°C in summer. A 5/4mm wetsuit or thicker is recommended.
