Kornwerderzand is a kitesurfing spot located at the Frisian end of the Afsluitdijk, on the shores of the IJsselmeer. It is easily accessible from the dike, with free parking by the shore and a small beach for launching.
The spot is known for its often strong winds, in a typical Dutch polder setting. It is a popular place for experienced riders looking for flat water on this inland lake.
Navigation takes place along the dike, with a grassy area to inflate the kites and a direct entry into the water.

chopchopThe spot works well with winds from the north to northwest (N, NNE, NE, NNW), which are side-shore relative to the south-facing beach. With winds from east to west-southwest (NE-E-SE-S-SW), conditions are also optimal, side-on to side-off depending on the exact direction.
The water surface is generally flat to chop, typical of a lake like the IJsselmeer, with no dependence on tides. The navigation area extends along the Afsluitdijk, with easy launching from the sandy beach and a take-off zone on the adjacent grassy strip.
Be careful, the water becomes quickly deep just after the shore, which requires good control for jibes and jumps. On windless days, thermals can rise in the late afternoon for foiling.
The ideal conditions are with winds N, NNE, NE, NNW between 15 and 25 kts, side-shore and consistent. Avoid winds that are too strong which make the spot too technical.
The water state is flat in light wind, turning to chop with sustained winds. No significant waves, ideal for freestyle or precise freeride.
The currents are weak to moderate on this closed lake, with no strong ocean tides. However, near the dike, local flows can form with strong winds.
Opt for sizes 9 to 12 m² in typical conditions, smaller (7-9 m²) in strong wind and larger (12-14 m²) on light days.
The winds are strong and consistent on the IJsselmeer, often exceeding 15-20 kts due to the canal effect of the dike. The dominant directions range from northeast to southwest, with marked gusts in winter and thermals in summer.
The climate in Friesland is oceanic, with cool temperatures year-round: around 8°C in winter and up to 20°C in summer. The intermediate seasons often offer the best sessions, with a frequent risk of rain but regular winds.

Water temperatures range from 4-8°C in winter to 18-22°C in summer on the IJsselmeer. A 5/4 mm wetsuit is recommended most of the time.
