Informations utiles
The wind generally blows side-on shore from the southeast, thanks to the dominant trade winds, ideal for easy launching from the beach. The navigation area extends into the vast shallow lagoon, with a large beach for launching and landing without major obstacles.
The water surface is mostly flat in the lagoon, perfect for beginners and freestyle, but transitions to chop or small waves near the reef depending on the tide and wind. The tidal amplitudes are significant, making the spot particularly usable at high tide for more depth and freedom.
For advanced riders, you can head out to the reef waves by passing the barrier, or do downwinds along the islets with a boat. Be cautious of boats and buoys in certain areas of the lagoon.
The ideal conditions are a side-on shore SE wind at 20-25 knots, stable and without gusts, to fully enjoy the flat lagoon.
The water is translucent and turquoise, with a water surface flat to chop depending on the tide and wind, and reef waves accessible for advanced riders. The bottom is sandy with sandbanks ideal for lessons.
Currents are generally weak in the lagoon, but can intensify near the coral reef or in certain channels. Significant tides strongly influence the conditions, with more safety at high tide.
For a rider weighing 70-80 kg, plan for kite sizes of 9 to 12 m² on average, with smaller sizes (7-9 m²) for windy days and larger sizes (11-13 m²) in light winds.
The dominant southeast trade winds ensure a steady wind of 20 knots on average, which can rise to 35 knots in the dry season. The SE direction is prevalent, side-on shore relative to the east-facing beach.
The tropical climate of Rodrigues is warm and humid all year round, with average temperatures around 25-30°C in the air and a dry season from April to December ideal for kitesurfing. The rainy season in January-March is more variable but the wind often remains present.
Le lagon est peu profond, on a pied même à marée haute sur une grande zone, avec un fond sableux progressif idéal pour l'apprentissage.
The water remains warm all year round between 24-28°C, generally without the need for a wetsuit, maybe a thin neoprene in the southern winter (June-August).
