Torre Grande beach, located in the Gulf of Oristano in Sardinia, is a kitesurfing spot highly appreciated by competitors and locals. It features a long stretch of fine sand with a friendly atmosphere thanks to the schools and sporting events organized regularly.

The spot is known for having hosted world and European championships of Formula Kite, such as the Open Water Challenge and the Youth European Championship. It is a favorite place for riders looking for reliable conditions in a safe environment.

With schools like Lido Eolo, Torre Grande offers easy access to kitesurfing, windsurfing, and other water sports year-round.

The wind data shown here comes from ERA5 (via Open-Meteo) over 4 years, reprocessed to reflect realistic conditions.
👉 Average wind has been calibrated to avoid the usual underestimation of models.
👉 Gusts have been corrected by a median ratio to avoid unrealistic extreme values.
👉 Each day is summarized by the median wind (P50) observed during useful hours (8am–8pm), then classified into wind ranges.
👉 The weighted mode mixes average wind and gusts to best reflect felt wind.

  • 🟢 10–16 kts: light but sailable wind (especially on foil).
  • 🟡 16–22 kts: ideal range, comfortable conditions for most.
  • 🔴 22–28 kts: strong wind, reserved for experienced riders.
  • 🟣 28+ kts: extreme conditions, committed riding.

Riding conditions

Torre Grande beach faces the Gulf of Oristano, making it a protected and extremely safe spot for kitesurfing regardless of the dominant wind. Winds from all quadrants work well due to the central configuration of the gulf, with easy access directly from the sandy beach.

The navigation area is wide and clear, ideal for freeride, foiling, or speed competitions like Formula Kite. Launching takes place on the equipped beach with a dedicated space, and the water remains navigable even with side-shore or cross-shore winds without overly choppy areas.

No pronounced tidal effect in the gulf, the water surface remains consistent with a shallow water zone near the shore for beginners. Local schools like Eolo offer marked zones to avoid conflicts with bathers in summer.

Ideal wind
NWdominant
Wdominant
SW

Ideal conditions are with winds from NW to SW, side-on to side-off, offering a flat water surface and consistent power for explosive sessions.

Sea state

The water surface is generally flat to light chop, protected by the bay, perfect for foiling and freeriding. In strong winds, a small swell may form but remains navigable without significant waves.

Sea currents

Currents are weak to negligible in the protected Gulf of Oristano. Tides have minimal impact, with a low amplitude that does not disrupt navigation.

Recommended kite size

Opt for kite sizes of 9 to 12 m² in typical conditions of 15-25 knots, with 7-9 m² for days with strong Maestrale.

Weather & wind

The wind regime is reliable due to the central position in the gulf, with the Maestrale (NW) as the dominant wind in winter, bringing consistent strength. All winds work, from Mistral to Scirocco, with ideal sessions for international competitions held here.

Wind strengths typically range from 15-30 knots, making the spot versatile for all levels and disciplines.

Climate

The Mediterranean climate of Sardinia offers mild temperatures year-round, with hot summers around 28-32°C and mild winters around 12-18°C. It is a spot that can be used 12 months a year, particularly windy in winter and autumn.

Rainfall is rare, concentrated in autumn, giving way to generous sunshine that makes sessions enjoyable even outside the summer season.

Depth

The depth is gradual with a clean sandy bottom. You can stand at a good distance from the shore, ideal for relaunches and beginners.

Water temperature

Water temperatures range from 14-16°C in winter to 22-25°C in summer, with a shorty wetsuit sufficient from June to October.
