Putzu Idu

The Spiaggia di Mandriola in Putzu Idu, on the west coast of Sardinia, is a fine sandy beach bordered by salt pans where you can observe pink flamingos. Located between Porto Mandriola and Putzu Idu, it is part of a wild corner of the Sinis peninsula, about twenty kilometers northwest of Oristano.

It is a popular kitesurfing spot known for its shallow waters and long rolling waves, perfect for surf-kite sessions. The beach is about 1200 meters long, with parking, bars, and restaurants nearby, and you can even take an excursion to the island of Mal di Ventre.

The atmosphere is family-friendly and relaxed, ideal for combining riding and swimming, especially with its gently sloping bottom.

The wind data shown here comes from ERA5 (via Open-Meteo) over 4 years, reprocessed to reflect realistic conditions.
👉 Average wind has been calibrated to avoid the usual underestimation of models.
👉 Gusts have been corrected by a median ratio to avoid unrealistic extreme values.
👉 Each day is summarized by the median wind (P50) observed during useful hours (8am–8pm), then classified into wind ranges.
👉 The weighted mode mixes average wind and gusts to best reflect felt wind.

  • 🟢 10–16 kts: light but sailable wind (especially on foil).
  • 🟡 16–22 kts: ideal range, comfortable conditions for most.
  • 🔴 22–28 kts: strong wind, reserved for experienced riders.
  • 🟣 28+ kts: extreme conditions, committed riding.

Riding conditions

The Mandriola beach is oriented westward, making it ideal for a side-shore wind from the NW (mistral), the local dominant wind that regularly blows strong, up to force 7 for two consecutive days. This wind arrives side-on from the right for a rider facing the sea, clean and consistent, perfect for smooth jibes and surfing on the long rolling waves.

Launching is easy everywhere on the fine sand, with a wide and obstacle-free take-off area. The navigation area extends several hundred meters offshore, thanks to shallow waters for dozens of meters, allowing you to ride close to the shore without risk. However, be cautious of the N which is gustier and harder to manage.

No strong tides in the Mediterranean, so the water surface remains stable: moderate chop on windy days, with side-shore waves for wavers. The salt pans to the north provide some protection from the mistral, making the spot sheltered compared to the nearby Capo Mannu. Ideal wind
NWdominant

Ideal conditions are a NW side-shore mistral at 20-30 knots, with a choppy but rideable water surface and waves for jumping. Force 7 over two days offers unforgettable marathon sessions.

Sea state

The water surface features a sandy bottom with crystal-clear turquoise waters, and long rolling waves perfect for surf-kite. It is shallow for dozens of meters, ideal for progressing safely.

Sea currents

Currents are generally weak on this sheltered beach, typical of the Sardinian west coast. Mediterranean tides are minimal (less than 30 cm), with no major impact on navigation.

Recommended kite size

For the strong mistral, plan for sizes 7 to 11 m² depending on your weight and wind level. 9-11 m² for light days, 7-9 m² when it blows hard.

Weather & wind

The wind regime is dominated by the mistral from the NW, which often blows up to force 7 during two consecutive days of sessions. It is a regular side-shore wind, ideal for kitesurfing, with consistent conditions on the west beach.

The N also arrives but is more gusty, less predictable for advanced maneuvers.

Climate

The Mediterranean climate of western Sardinia offers hot, dry summers with temperatures around 30°C in July-August, and mild winters around 15°C. The kitesurfing season runs from April to October, with reliable wind throughout the year according to high scores.

Spring and autumn are great for avoiding crowds, with sunny days and pleasant temperatures of 20-25°C.

Depth

The depth is gradual with a pure sandy bottom. You can stand up to dozens of meters from the shore, perfect for beginners and families.

Water temperature

In summer, the water reaches 22-25°C, with no wetsuit needed. In spring and autumn, expect 18-20°C, a 5/3 mm is sufficient. Mild winter around 15°C.
