Platamona

Spiaggia 1° Pettine in Platamona, Northern Sardinia, is part of a long stretch of sand that extends for several kilometers between Porto Torres and Sorso. It is a popular spot for local kiters and windsurfers due to its exposed position and easy access from Sassari.

The beach offers a shallow sandy bottom, with clear water and a lively atmosphere in season, where kite schools and bathers mingle. There are beach establishments and bars to relax after a session.

This place becomes particularly lively with the steady wind, attracting riders in search of consistent conditions on this northwest coast.

The wind data shown here comes from ERA5 (via Open-Meteo) over 4 years, reprocessed to reflect realistic conditions.
👉 Average wind has been calibrated to avoid the usual underestimation of models.
👉 Gusts have been corrected by a median ratio to avoid unrealistic extreme values.
👉 Each day is summarized by the median wind (P50) observed during useful hours (8am–8pm), then classified into wind ranges.
👉 The weighted mode mixes average wind and gusts to best reflect felt wind.

  • 🟢 10–16 kts: light but sailable wind (especially on foil).
  • 🟡 16–22 kts: ideal range, comfortable conditions for most.
  • 🔴 22–28 kts: strong wind, reserved for experienced riders.
  • 🟣 28+ kts: extreme conditions, committed riding.

Riding conditions

Platamona is oriented facing west-northwest, ideal for the maestrale (NW) which blows side-on from the sea, bringing a choppy to wavy water surface depending on the strength. The water entry is directly from the wide sandy beach, without obstacles, with a spacious launch area at 1° Pettine which is the least gusty central part of the bay.

Navigation extends for several kilometers along the beach, while remaining vigilant on the marked swimming zones in summer. The bottom remains shallow and sandy for a good distance from the shore, perfect for easy restarts. In the bathing season, authorized corridors are defined by schools like near Porto Torres – Platamona.

With weak tides in the Mediterranean, the water surface does not change much, but the lightly gusty wind in the central position allows for long and stable sessions, even for intermediates.

Ideal wind
NWdominant
Wdominant

Ideal conditions are with maestrale 18-25 knots side-on, for a fun choppy water surface and constant power. Avoid pure onshore which makes take-off technical.

Sea state

The water surface is typically choppy with the maestrale, becoming wavy with sustained wind, but remains navigable due to the sandy bottom. The water is clear and shallow near the shore, ideal for freestyle or freeride.

Sea currents

Currents are generally weak along the beach but can strengthen near channels or in case of strong NW winds. Mediterranean tides are weak, less than 50 cm, with no major impact on navigation.

Recommended kite size

Opt for sizes 9 to 12 m² in medium maestrale wind, and 7 to 9 m² when it blows strong. In summer thermal, 11-14 m² are often sufficient.

Weather & wind

The dominant wind is the maestrale (NW), steady and powerful, often blowing 15-25 knots in winter and spring. In summer, the sirocco (SE) can come in side-off, more thermal and consistent in the bay.

Platamona is known for its lightly gusty wind due to its central position, with reliable sessions all year round according to weather data.

Climate

The Mediterranean climate of Northern Sardinia offers warm summers around 28-32°C and mild winters around 12-16°C. Rainfall is rare, concentrated in autumn, with more than 300 sunny days per year.

The Platamona area benefits from a protected micro-climate, suitable for kiting all year round, especially from March to November when air temperatures rise.

Depth

The depth is gradual with a sandy bottom. You can stand up to 50-100 meters from the shore, perfect for beginners and restarts.

Water temperature

In summer, the water reaches 22-26°C, comfortable in a shorty. Winter around 14-17°C, 5/3 mm neoprene recommended. Spring-autumn 18-22°C.
