Guardia Grande

The Spiaggia di Mugoni, located in the Porto Conte bay near Alghero in Sardinia, is a fine sandy beach in a protected setting of the regional natural park. It offers crystal clear and calm waters, ideal for water activities when the wind is right.

It is a spot known to windsurf and kitesurf enthusiasts for its sheltered bay, although the wind is not always consistent. Locals appreciate its peaceful atmosphere and proximity to sites like Capo Caccia.

Surrounded by pines and cliffs, the beach also attracts for snorkeling and walks, with equipment rentals available on site.

The wind data shown here comes from ERA5 (via Open-Meteo) over 4 years, reprocessed to reflect realistic conditions.
👉 Average wind has been calibrated to avoid the usual underestimation of models.
👉 Gusts have been corrected by a median ratio to avoid unrealistic extreme values.
👉 Each day is summarized by the median wind (P50) observed during useful hours (8am–8pm), then classified into wind ranges.
👉 The weighted mode mixes average wind and gusts to best reflect felt wind.

  • 🟢 10–16 kts: light but sailable wind (especially on foil).
  • 🟡 16–22 kts: ideal range, comfortable conditions for most.
  • 🔴 22–28 kts: strong wind, reserved for experienced riders.
  • 🟣 28+ kts: extreme conditions, committed riding.

Riding conditions

The beach of Mugoni is oriented towards the southwest in the Porto Conte bay, making it sensitive to Maestrale (northwest) winds in side-shore or side-on when blowing strong, but the wind is often unpredictable and weak, especially in summer due to insufficient thermals. Launching is done directly from the fine and wide sand, with an easy take-off area in the center of the beach.

The water surface is generally flat to light chop thanks to the bay's protection, perfect for freeride sailing or first sessions, but be careful of areas crowded with bathers in high season. The navigation area extends throughout the bay, up to a kilometer from the shore, with easy return to the beach by side-shore wind.

No major tidal effect here, but on days with offshore winds from the south, the sea can become choppy. Schools and rentals like Shore Wind offer gear on site, and it's best to check the live webcam to confirm conditions before coming.

Ideal wind
NWdominant

Ideal conditions are a side-shore Maestrale of 18-25 knots, stable and thermal in the afternoon. Avoid offshore days from the south that make the sea choppy.

Sea state

The waters are crystal clear and calm most of the time, with a flat water surface ideal for freeride when the wind is side. Few waves, except during strong mistral which creates a slight chop.

Sea currents

Currents are weak in the protected bay of Mugoni, thanks to its closed configuration. Tides have a low impact, with a range of about 0.5 m, without notable dangerous channels.

Recommended kite size

Opt for sizes of 9 to 12 m² in typical light wind, or 7-9 m² when the Maestrale picks up. Adjust according to your weight and gust levels.

Weather & wind

The typical wind is the Maestrale coming from the northwest, which can blow regularly at 15-25 knots in the cold season, but it is often weak and irregular in summer. Daytime thermals sometimes add a breeze, with no guarantee of strength for kiting.

Climate

The Mediterranean climate of the Alghero region offers warm summers around 25-30°C and mild winters around 10-15°C. Rainfall is rare, concentrated in autumn, with plenty of sunshine year-round.

The best months for kiting vary according to data, but the Maestrale dominates from September to April, while summer is calmer and more touristy.

Depth

The depth is gradual with a clean sandy bottom. You can stand up to about 50-100 m from the shore, perfect for restarts.

Water temperature

Water temperatures range from 14-16°C in winter to 22-25°C in summer. A shorty wetsuit is sufficient from May to October.
