The beach of Spiaggia (south) in Agnone Bagni, on the southeast coast of Sicily, is a stretch of fine sand bordered by the Ionian Sea. It is a popular spot among locals for its easy access and clear water.
Located near the bay of Catania, it offers an open setting without major obstacles, perfect for relaxed sessions. Riders come here for the laid-back atmosphere and the proximity to neighboring spots.
Throughout the year, it attracts windsurfers and kiters seeking natural conditions, especially outside the summer season.
The wind data shown here comes from ERA5 (via Open-Meteo) over 4 years, reprocessed to reflect realistic conditions.
👉 Average wind has been calibrated to avoid the usual underestimation of models.
👉 Gusts have been corrected by a median ratio to avoid unrealistic extreme values.
👉 Each day is summarized by the median wind (P50) observed during useful hours (8am–8pm), then classified into wind ranges.
👉 The weighted mode mixes average wind and gusts to best reflect felt wind.
The spot works well with winds from east and southeast coming side-on relative to the north-south oriented beach, creating a regular water surface without significant tide in the Mediterranean. Launching is done directly from the wide sandy beach, with an easy take-off area on dry sand.
The navigation area extends several hundred meters offshore, with a gradually deepening bottom but remaining manageable for relaunches. In case of onshore east wind, the water surface becomes moderate chop, ideal for freeride or slalom, while stronger winds from grecale provide punch for freestyle.
Local peculiarity: the beach can be dirty in places with trash or seaweed, but the space is vast to avoid crowds. Prefer the southern side for a better side-shore angle and cleaner water.
Ideal conditions are winds of 10-25 knots from the east or northeast, side-on, for a smooth and powerful water surface.
The state of the water varies from flat to chop depending on wind strength, with clear and clean water most of the time.
No significant waves except in winter with small waves of 1m under scirocco.
Currents are generally weak due to the absence of marked tides in the Mediterranean, making navigation serene for all levels.
However, be cautious of local reversals near rocky points in case of strong winds.
Opt for kite sizes of 9 to 12m² in light thermal wind, and 7 to 9m² under gusts of grecale.
The wind regime is dominated by the thermal east wind in the afternoon during summer, rarely exceeding 15 knots, and by the grecale (northeast) in winter which can rise to 20-25 knots.
Winds are consistent and predictable, with a high annual average due to the exposed position of the Ionian coast. The southeast (scirocco) brings warmth and strength in autumn.
The Mediterranean climate of the region offers mild temperatures year-round, with averages of 10-15°C in winter and 25-30°C in summer. Winters are mild without frost, and summers are hot but breezy.
The optimal season for kiting extends from September to May, avoiding the summer crowds, with nearly constant sunshine exceeding 300 days per year.
The depth is gradual with a sandy bottom, and you can stand up to about 100-150m from the shore depending on conditions.
Water temperatures range between 14-16°C in winter and 24-27°C in summer, requiring a shorty or lycra outside the warm season.
