Achill Island
Keel Beach is a wild beach located on Achill Island, in County Mayo, Ireland. Facing west, it offers a spectacular setting with its dunes and turquoise water in good weather. It is a popular spot for local surfers due to its consistent waves, in an isolated atmosphere typical of the Irish Atlantic.
Easy access via the coastal road from Keel village, with parking close to the beach. The environment is preserved, perfect for those looking to escape the crowds, although the Atlantic wind can make sessions lively.
Less known to kiters than to surfers, but viable when the wind aligns well from the northeast.

Informations utiles
Keel Beach is exposed to the west, making it an onshore spot with southwest or west winds, and side-on to side-offshore with northeast winds which are best for surfing and potentially kiting. The navigation area extends over about 1 km of wide beach, with easy launching on sand but beware of the waves. Launching usually occurs at the center of the beach to avoid rocky areas at the ends. At high tide, the water is wider and the waves more powerful; at low tide, the beach partially dries out with areas of rocks that are exposed. Southwest swells dominate, creating a choppy to wavy water, ideal for strapless but challenging for pure kiting. Winds are often strong in winter, with gusts up to 30-35 kts on the Atlantic side.
Ideal conditions with northeast offshore wind at 15-25 kts, combined with moderate southwest swell for clean and rideable water.
Water is generally wavy with swells from the southwest of 1-3m, choppy under onshore wind. Glassy conditions possible with light offshore wind. Consistent waves year-round, making the spot more surf-oriented than kite-flat.
Currents are moderate but can intensify with the high tides of the Atlantic, typical of the Irish west coast. Beware of rip currents near the breaks in case of strong swell. Semi-diurnal tides with an average 4-5m amplitude.
Opt for sizes 9 to 12m² in typical conditions of 20-30 kts, smaller like 7-9m² in gusts or storm.
The wind regime is dominated by Atlantic depressions, with frequent and strong winds from the southwest to west, often 20-30 kts on average season. Northeast offshore winds are rarer but perfect for clean sessions. No specific local name, but storms bring powerful gusts.
The climate on Achill Island is oceanic, cool, and humid year-round, with average temperatures of 8-12°C in summer and 4-8°C in winter. The best months for wind are January, March to October, with frequent showers and sustained wind. Windy and rainy winters, milder summers but still refreshed by the Atlantic.
Profondeur progressive à partir d'un fond sableux mêlé de rochers. On a pied sur 50-100m en marée basse selon les sources surf.
Water temperatures around 17°C in summer (June-August), dropping to 9-12°C in winter. A 3/2mm wetsuit is recommended in the warm season, fullsuit 5/4mm for the rest of the year.
