Raches in Drepano, in the Maliac Gulf, is one of the best kitesurf spots on the Greek continent. Just two hours from Athens and 35 minutes from Volos airport, it is easily accessible via the A1 highway. The traditional fishing village of Raches lines the bay of Malia, with its taverns and a pleasant summer calm.
The riding area is located 2 km from the village, where everything is gathered for a convenient stay. It is a popular spot for freestylers due to its flat water and constant wind, especially in summer.
Two local schools offer courses tailored to the spot's conditions, although water access is not ideal for complete beginners.

flatThe wind typically blows from the east to northeast, but the spot works with almost all directions due to the venturi effect of the surrounding mountains. With an east or west wind, you get an offshore area with butter-flat water perfect for freestyle, limited in space but manageable by turning towards the beach to jump and then heading back upwind.
On the other side, onshore wind creates chop and small waves depending on the strength. Launching is technical due to the rocks and rapid depth after a few meters; neoprene booties are recommended. The coarse sand beach mixed with pebbles extends into the sea, forming two distinct areas.
Launching takes place on the beach, but beware of the crowd on summer weekends. Schools like Cape Drepano Kite Center or No Work are nearby for gear and advice.
Ideal with east or west wind at 15-25 knots for perfect offshore flat. The Meltemi enhances summer sessions.
The water is clear and beautiful, with an ideal flat offshore area for tricks, and choppy to wavy onshore. At low tide, a sandbank emerges for even more flat. Mountains around provide a great backdrop.
Currents are generally weak in the bay, with no marked tides in the Mediterranean. No major channel reported, but caution is advised with strong winds that can enhance local flows.
Opt for 9 to 11 m² sizes in typical 15-25 knots conditions. Smaller sizes like 7-9 m² when the Meltemi is strong.
The wind regime is hyper constant thanks to the Meltemi thermal from late July to early August, often exceeding 20 knots daily. Generally, 15-25 knots from the east to northeast in summer, with rare stability due to the terrain. Best season from June to September, but rideable from April to October.
The climate is Mediterranean, with hot, dry summers conducive to thermal winds. Mild winters contrast, but the spot shines from spring to autumn. Nearly 300 days of wind per year, although sometimes in short windows.
La profondeur augmente rapidement après quelques mètres, avec un fond de sable grossier, rochers et plaques rocheuses près du shore. On a pied seulement très près du bord.
In summer, the water reaches 24-26°C, a 3/2 shorty is sufficient. In spring and autumn, around 18-22°C, a comfortable 5/4 neo for long sessions.
