Cape Drepano, near Arachovitika in western Greece, is a legendary kitesurf spot known for its perfect flat water and ultra-consistent wind. Located just minutes from Patras, it attracts riders from around the world despite its industrial backdrop with an unattractive factory in the background.
The pebble and sand beach offers an exceptional flat area thanks to a sandbank that appears mainly at low tide. It’s a paradise for freestyle, with crystal clear water and stable conditions almost all year round.
The spot gets crowded on summer weekends, but early in the morning, there’s a friendly atmosphere with locals and pros training.

flatThe spot works perfectly with a wind from the west or east, both of which are offshore relative to the north-facing beach. With these directions, the water surface is butterflat over the sandbank area, ideal for freestyle and ground tricks. The further downwind you go, it becomes a bit more chop due to the offshore wind.
Launching is done directly from the pebble-sand beach, but be careful of crowded areas: you need to navigate close to the beach to make the most of the limited flat space. Taking off requires patience on crowded days, especially with pros occupying the best area. At low tide, the sandbank extends and offers more space to navigate in circles: you go towards the beach to jump, then come back downwind.
Tides influence the size of the flat area: at high tide, the sandbank partially disappears and the space shrinks, making navigation more technical. The spot is surrounded by mountains that channel the wind, keeping it consistent regardless of the dominant direction of the day.
Ideal conditions are with a wind from the west or east between 15-25 knots, offshore, for a perfect flat on the sandbank.
The water is crystal clear and the water surface is ultra-flat in the central area with offshore wind, perfect for freestyle. It gets slightly choppy downwind or at high tide when the sandbank is less visible.
Currents are generally weak at the spot. Tides are moderate and mainly influence the navigation area rather than strong currents.
Opt for small sizes suitable for strong and consistent wind: 7 to 11m² depending on your weight and the day.
The wind is ultra-consistent, with about 300 days of wind per year in the Gulf of Patraikos. It often blows from the west or east, channeled by the surrounding mountains, and can change direction on different days without affecting the quality.
Sessions sometimes last 1-2 hours, but in late spring and summer (April-July) or early autumn (September-October), the windows are longer and more reliable.
The Mediterranean climate of the Patras region offers mild temperatures year-round, with hot summers around 30°C and mild winters around 15°C. The best months for kiting are from April to October, with reliable wind and pleasant water.
In winter, it’s cooler but the wind remains, perfect for those looking for sessions without the summer crowd.

In June-September, the water is at 22-26°C, a shorty is sufficient. For the rest of the year, plan for a long wetsuit as it drops to 16-20°C.
