Rügen
Dranske, located at the northern tip of the island of Rügen in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, is one of the most accessible kitesurfing spots in the German Baltic. This spot offers a large shallow water navigation area, ideal for progressing without major risks. The beach has a well-cleared grassy launch area and excellent facilities.
The spot is particularly appreciated for its consistent wind and very wide wind window. Unlike most spots in the Baltic, Dranske works well with varied wind directions, making it a reliable place even when conditions are not perfect elsewhere. The atmosphere is relaxed, away from mass tourism, with an authentic charm of the German east coast.

Informations utiles
Dranske primarily works with east to southeast winds, which come in side-shore to side-on from the left. The wind window is exceptionally wide compared to other spots in Rügen, meaning the spot remains navigable even with imprecise wind directions. The water is generally shallow and very accessible, with easy access from the grassy beach.
The navigation area extends over a large distance in shallow water, allowing riders to progress without fear. The bottom is sandy and gradual, offering maximum safety. Conditions are generally choppy with small ripples, rarely structured waves, which is perfect for intermediate riders looking to progress in freestyle or speed. The kitesurfing school Rügen Pirates is based on-site, making access to local services and advice easy.
The ideal conditions at Dranske are winds of 12 to 18 knots from the east to southeast. These directions offer a perfect side-shore to side-on for navigation. With the very wide wind window of the spot, riders can comfortably navigate even with slightly off directions.
Northeast to east winds are particularly recommended for the best conditions. Stronger winds, up to 25 knots, remain navigable thanks to the gradual depth and safety of the spot.
The water at Dranske is characterized by choppy conditions with small ripples. The waves are generally very small, rarely exceeding 50 cm, even in sustained wind conditions. This feature makes it an ideal spot for progressing in freestyle, speed, or tricks without the complication of waves.
The water is generally calm and accessible, with decent visibility. The sandy and gradual bottom creates a very safe environment for navigation. Conditions remain stable throughout the day, with no major variations related to tides.
The currents at Dranske are generally weak to moderate, making the spot very safe for riders of all levels. The tide has little influence on navigation conditions, but it is recommended to check local forecasts before heading out. The shallow water limits the effects of tidal currents.
For moderate winds of 12-15 knots, a kite of 14 to 17 m² is recommended for intermediate riders. For stronger winds, of 16-20 knots, a kite of 12 to 14 m² offers better control. Lighter riders can opt for slightly larger sizes, while heavier riders will prefer smaller sizes.
The variability of the wind at Dranske makes it useful to have two kites in your quiver to adapt to the day's conditions.
The wind regime at Dranske is dominated by east to southeast winds, which regularly come from the Baltic. These winds are generally moderate and consistent, rarely extreme. The very wide wind window allows the spot to work with directions ranging from northeast to south-southeast, which is rare in the Baltic.
Northeast to east winds are the most frequent and offer the best conditions. Southeast winds also work well, providing good power. The wind strength generally varies between 12 and 20 knots in normal conditions, with possible gusts during low-pressure systems.
Rügen enjoys a temperate oceanic climate typical of the Baltic. Summers are mild and pleasant, with average temperatures around 18-20°C in July-August. Winters are cold, with temperatures often below zero from December to February. Spring and autumn offer intermediate conditions, with gradually changing temperatures.
The spot works year-round, but the best months for kitesurfing are generally April to October, when weather conditions are more stable and temperatures are milder. Winter can offer consistent wind but requires significant thermal protection.
