Strand Heiligenhafen is a kitesurfing spot located on the Baltic Sea coast in Heiligenhafen, Schleswig-Holstein. It features a large sand beach up to 150 meters wide, providing plenty of space to set up and launch, with dedicated parking for kiters.
The spot developed after kiting was banned at the nearby Steinwarder, becoming the main location for riders in the area. There is a large standing area due to a water level that drops very slowly, ideal for progression.
Schools like Wassersportcenter-Heiligenhafen offer on-site lessons, and the atmosphere is friendly with a clear separation of swimming zones.

flatThe spot works well with west and northwest winds coming side-shore from the left or side-onshore, bringing waves that break on the sandbanks offshore. For northwest, a nice wave forms on the sandbank, surfable from 5 Beaufort.
Launching is done directly on the wide beach in front of the Katamarancenter, with plenty of space for takeoff and landing. The water is flat water near the shore, perfect for freestyle, especially with east wind where the water remains smooth as it is protected by Fehmarn.
Navigation areas extend over a wide sector without major obstacles like shallows, unlike neighboring spots. However, be careful to navigate far from the swimming areas to the east and the old pier in the center. Free parking is just behind the marina, with grass for rigging and beach access through pathways.
Ideal conditions are with winds W, WNW, NW, NNW side-shore or side-onshore, starting at 15-25 knots for surfable waves and flat water inside.
The water is flat near the shore with a large standing area, becoming chop or wave offshore depending on the wind. Waves break early on the sandbanks, avoiding a violent shorebreak.
The bottom is sandy, slightly rocky at the launch but quickly turns to pure sand.
Currents are generally weak at this Baltic spot, with no significant tides affecting navigation. The sandbanks protect the shore from strong flows.
Opt for sizes 9 to 12 m² in typical Baltic conditions, smaller like 7-9 m² when the wind picks up strongly from NW.
The prevailing winds come from the northwest and west, blowing freely over the Kiel Bay. The pattern is regular in season, with powerful sideshore sessions starting at 5 Bft.
No specific local name, but NW brings the best waves, while east provides flat conditions for freestyle.
