The Aartalsee is a lake located in Bischoffen, Hesse, in central Germany. This spot is managed by the Windsurfclub Aartalsee, a popular place for windsurfing and kitesurfing enthusiasts due to its calm water and easy access from the surrounding grassy areas.
Surrounded by lush landscapes typical of the Hegelian region, it offers pleasant sailing away from coastal crowds. Locals come here for regular sessions, especially when the wind establishes from the west.
It is a discreet place, perfect for progressing in flat conditions without the complications of waves or sea currents.

The Aartalsee spot offers a flat water surface ideal for freestyle and wakestyle. Launching is done directly from the club's grassy beach, with a wide and clear take-off area on the banks.
The dominant side-shore winds come from the NW or W, blowing across the lake for consistent power without risking offshore that could pull the kite away. The navigation area extends along the entire length of the lake, about 2 km, with enough space for jibes and tricks without hassle.
No tide since it is a freshwater lake, so conditions remain constant. However, be cautious of shallow areas near the shores where you need to navigate carefully during low wind sessions.
Ideal conditions are a side-shore NW or W wind between 12-20 knots, for a flat water surface and consistent power. Avoid pure onshore E which may make the spot turbulent.
The water state is generally flat to light chop, perfect for beginners and intermediates seeking stability. In strong wind, a small chop forms but remains manageable.
No waves, thanks to the shelter of the surrounding hills that protect the lake from violent storms.
As a freshwater lake, there is no significant current at the Aartalsee. The water remains calm without the influence of tides or powerful rivers.
Only strong winds can create a slight directional chop, but nothing dangerous for riders.
Opt for sizes 9 to 12 m² in typical conditions of 10-20 knots. Smaller kites 7-9 m² are suitable for windy days, while 11-13 m² are perfect for light thermals.
The wind regime at the Aartalsee is variable but regular in the late afternoon, often thermal in summer with gusts reaching 15-25 knots. The main directions are W and NW, brought by Atlantic depressions crossing the region.
No specific local name, but the wind picks up around 2 PM and holds until sunset in the warm season. Stats show potential throughout all months, with a peak in spring and autumn.
The climate in Hesse is continental with mild summers around 20-25°C and cold winters dropping to 0-5°C. Spring and autumn offer pleasant temperatures between 10-18°C, ideal for kiting without too much wetsuit.
Precipitation is spread throughout the year, but summer months are drier. The spot is usable year-round thanks to potential wind, although winter requires a combiflex 5/4.
La profondeur est progressive avec un fond principalement sableux-herbeux. On a pied jusqu'à environ 50-100 m du bord, idéal pour les redécollages et l'apprentissage.
In summer, the water reaches 18-22°C, comfortable in a shorty. In spring and autumn, expect 12-16°C with a 4/3 wetsuit. Winter drops to 5-8°C, reserved for the most motivated.
