Saint-Laurent-du-Var

The Cousteau beach in Saint-Laurent-du-Var, on the Côte d'Azur, is a popular spot for kiters due to its convenient location near Nice. Lined with palm trees, it offers a lively atmosphere with a view of the Var estuary. It's a place where locals regularly gather to ride.

The beach is narrow, about 10 meters wide, which makes launching a bit technical, especially with people around. There is a dedicated area on the right side, called the Comtesse beach, where assistance is common. The spot is monitored in summer, but kitesurfing is prohibited within a radius of 300 meters from April 15 to October 15.

Close to the airport, it sometimes benefits from a protective effect that calms the water with certain winds, making freeride sessions enjoyable.

The wind data shown here comes from ERA5 (via Open-Meteo) over 4 years, reprocessed to reflect realistic conditions.
👉 Average wind has been calibrated to avoid the usual underestimation of models.
👉 Gusts have been corrected by a median ratio to avoid unrealistic extreme values.
👉 Each day is summarized by the median wind (P50) observed during useful hours (8am–8pm), then classified into wind ranges.
👉 The weighted mode mixes average wind and gusts to best reflect felt wind.

  • 🟢 10–16 kts: light but sailable wind (especially on foil).
  • 🟡 16–22 kts: ideal range, comfortable conditions for most.
  • 🔴 22–28 kts: strong wind, reserved for experienced riders.
  • 🟣 28+ kts: extreme conditions, committed riding.

Riding conditions

The spot mainly works with East or South-East winds, which are side-shore to side-on relative to the southwest-oriented beach. The airport protects the Var estuary from waves, creating a flat to light chop water state ideal for freeride. The navigation area extends in front of the beach between the tip of Bateg and the white buoy, nicknamed "yogurt pot" by locals.

With West or South-West winds (mistral), it is offshore and more exposed, with powerful shore break waves due to the breakwaters and the nearby airport. Launching is done from the narrow beach, mandatory vigilance for streetlights, parking, and road in west wind. Take-off and landing on the Comtesse beach to the right, where there is space but be cautious of bathers in season. Tides do not significantly influence conditions, it is consistent.

Areas to avoid: shallows and rocks, especially when foiling. The reef break can rise to over 3m with large swells, reserved for experts. Always check the prohibited area of 300m in summer.

Ideal conditions are east to southeast winds at 15-25 kts, side-shore, for a flat protected water state. Avoid strong west winds unless experienced, as they are offshore and choppy.

Sea state

The water state varies from flat protected by east wind to chop or small waves by offshore mistral. Powerful shore break waves form near the breakwaters in the west, with occasional reef break up to 3m. The water is clear, but shallows are scattered throughout the area.

Sea currents

Currents are generally weak along the beach, but be cautious at the Var estuary where they can accelerate with the tide. Mediterranean tides are weak, less than one meter in amplitude, with no significant impact on navigation. Check for boat exits that can create choppy areas.

Recommended kite size

Opt for sizes from 9 to 12m² for moderate east winds, and 7 to 10m² for stronger mistral. Adjust according to your weight and level, aiming for 15-25 kts.

Weather & wind

The main wind is the mistral from West/South-West, strong and consistent, often blowing 15-25 kts in winter and spring. Winds from East/South-East are more frequent in summer, milder around 10-20 kts, side-shore and stable. The regime is thermal in the afternoon, reinforced by local effects from the airport and the reliefs.

Climate

The Mediterranean climate offers mild temperatures year-round, with hot summers around 25-30°C and mild winters around 10-15°C. The dry seasons dominate from May to October, while November to April sees more precipitation but remains navigable. It's a sunny region, perfect for riding almost 12 months.

Depth

The depth is gradual with a sandy bottom mixed with rocks. You can stand up to 20-30 meters from the shore depending on the areas, but be cautious of scattered shallows.

Water temperature

The water is around 14-16°C in winter, rising to 20-24°C in summer. A shorty wetsuit is recommended from April to October, and a full suit from November to March.
