Quiberon

The Grande Plage de Quiberon is one of the iconic spots of the Breton peninsula, located facing Belle-Île. It is a fine sandy beach that stretches generously, providing an ideal setting for kitesurfing. Access is easy and the atmosphere is particularly pleasant, especially at sunset when the pier plunges into the ocean.

This spot works well in freeride and freestyle conditions, with conditions often optimal for riders of all levels. The Grande Plage is appreciated for both its easy access and the beauty of the natural scenery that surrounds it.

The wind data shown here comes from ERA5 (via Open-Meteo) over 4 years, reprocessed to reflect realistic conditions.
👉 Average wind has been calibrated to avoid the usual underestimation of models.
👉 Gusts have been corrected by a median ratio to avoid unrealistic extreme values.
👉 Each day is summarized by the median wind (P50) observed during useful hours (8am–8pm), then classified into wind ranges.
👉 The weighted mode mixes average wind and gusts to best reflect felt wind.

  • 🟢 10–16 kts: light but sailable wind (especially on foil).

Riding conditions

The Grande Plage offers versatile conditions depending on the wind orientation. With an easterly wind, the spot works well as a side-shore, making it an ideal place for learning. With a westerly wind, conditions remain accessible with a good water surface.

The water surface varies with the tides. At low tide, the beach widens considerably and offers more space for launching and take-offs. At high tide, the pier plunges further into the ocean, creating an immersive atmosphere but slightly reducing the available space. Medium to low tides offer the most comfortable conditions.

The navigation area is well cleared without major obstacles. Riders can easily navigate from the shore and have enough space even in the busy summer season. Launching is done gradually on the fine sand, which reassures beginners.

Ideal conditions occur with an easterly wind of 15 to 20 knots, which offers perfect side-shore for the Grande Plage. Westerly and northwesterly winds, although stronger, are also suitable for experienced riders. Gusts up to 24 knots remain manageable at this spacious spot.

Sea state

The water surface at the Grande Plage is generally flat to moderately wavy, making it an excellent spot for freeride and freestyle. The constant swell from the Atlantic creates a regular bottom. At high tide, the waves can be more pronounced, offering interesting conditions for experienced riders. The absence of major obstacles ensures a clean and predictable water surface.

Sea currents

The general current at the Grande Plage is moderate and regular. Tides play an important role in the dynamics of the water body. Near channels and passages between the islands, the current can become more pronounced, but the Grande Plage itself offers relatively stable conditions. It is recommended to monitor tide conditions to optimize the session.

Recommended kite size

For the Grande Plage, the recommended kite sizes vary according to wind conditions. With winds of 13 to 15 knots, a kite of 11 to 13 square meters is appropriate. Between 15 and 20 knots, a kite of 9 to 11 square meters offers the best control. Beyond 20 knots, a kite of 7 to 9 square meters is preferable.

Weather & wind

The wind regime in Quiberon is dominated by westerly and northwesterly winds, particularly active in autumn and winter. Easterly winds are also frequent, especially in spring and summer, providing interesting side-shore conditions at the Grande Plage. Wind speeds generally vary between 13 and 19 knots, with gusts reaching up to 24 knots.

Climate

Quiberon enjoys a typically Breton oceanic climate. Temperatures remain moderate throughout the year, with mild winters and cool summers. The region experiences good exposure to Atlantic depression systems, making it a reliable destination for wind.

Depth

The Grande Plage offers a gradual depth with a fine sandy bottom. You can stand up to about 50 meters from the shore, making it a very accessible spot for learning. The regular and obstacle-free bottom ensures safe navigation even for beginners.

Water temperature

The water temperature in Quiberon varies with the seasons. In winter (December to February), it hovers around 8 to 10°C, requiring a thick wetsuit.
