Plouharnel

The beach of Sables Blancs in Plouharnel, at the eastern entrance of the Quiberon peninsula, is a large stretch of fine sand at the bottom of the bay. Sheltered by the state forest, it offers a wild and pleasant setting for kite sessions.

It is a popular spot for schools and locals due to its conditions suitable for freestyle and learning, with a often flat water surface. There are nearby campsites and easy access from Plouharnel.

The beach changes significantly with the tides, shifting from a swimming area at high tide to a space for tide pooling at low tide.

The wind data shown here comes from ERA5 (via Open-Meteo) over 4 years, reprocessed to reflect realistic conditions.
👉 Average wind has been calibrated to avoid the usual underestimation of models.
👉 Gusts have been corrected by a median ratio to avoid unrealistic extreme values.
👉 Each day is summarized by the median wind (P50) observed during useful hours (8am–8pm), then classified into wind ranges.
👉 The weighted mode mixes average wind and gusts to best reflect felt wind.

  • 🟢 10–16 kts: light but sailable wind (especially on foil).
  • 🟡 16–22 kts: ideal range, comfortable conditions for most.
  • 🔴 22–28 kts: strong wind, reserved for experienced riders.
  • 🟣 28+ kts: extreme conditions, committed riding.

Riding conditions

The spot works perfectly with an East wind, from southeast to northeast, which gives a side-on to side-off orientation relative to the west-facing beach. The launch area is directly from the fine, wide, and accessible sand, with a clear take-off zone near the parking and the pines.

The navigation area is vast in the bay, ideal for freestyle, with a water surface flat to light chop depending on the tide and wind. At high tide, the water rises and the spot remains navigable but with less standing room; at low tide, you can stand very far out, up to several hundred meters, perfect for beginners in the 'pool' near the campsite.

Be careful to respect the zones: bay side for kite, avoid the waves on the other side like Sainte-Barbe reserved for surfers. The northeast anticyclonic wind is often consistent when the weather is nice, and the spot is crowded on weekends with schools and land sailing.

S
SE
NEdominant
SW

The ideal conditions are an east wind at 15-25 knots, side-on, with medium tide for a good foot/water balance. It works well under sunny northeast high pressure.

Sea state

The water surface is typically flat, perfect for freestyle, but can become choppy with strong or irregular north winds. At low tide, vast areas of sand are exposed; at high tide, the water is shallow and calm.

Sea currents

Currents are generally weak in the bay, but they can intensify near the channels at low tide. Tides are significant, with high coefficients in Brittany, greatly altering depth and navigable areas.

Recommended kite size

In summer with light thermals, a 12m is often perfect for most riders. In autumn-winter, go down to 9-11m depending on weight and level.

Weather & wind

The prevailing wind comes from East to North-East, often thermal in summer and stronger in autumn-winter with depressions. Wind strengths vary from 10-15 knots in thermal to 20-30 knots in gusts, with good consistency under high pressure.

No specific local name, but it is the eastern sector that makes the spot magical, pure side-on.

Climate

The Breton climate is oceanic, with mild temperatures year-round: around 10-15°C in winter and 18-25°C in summer. Windy seasons start in autumn with Atlantic depressions, while light thermals prevail in summer.

Rain is frequent but sessions remain possible under high pressure. The entire year is viable, with a peak activity from October to April for stronger winds.

Depth

The depth is very gradual with a completely sandy bottom. You can stand very far out at low tide, up to 200-300m from the shore, ideal for beginners.

Water temperature

The water is cool: 10-14°C in winter-spring, 16-20°C in summer. Combined with the shallow depth, it warms quickly at high tide in summer.
