The Conque à Mèze, located on the northern shores of the Étang de Thau in Occitanie, is a popular spot in a protected and natural setting. This corner of the fishing port of Mèze offers direct access to the lagoon, with a calm and authentic atmosphere favored by local riders.
The ID Kite school is established there, making sessions easier for all levels. The area is vast and sheltered, perfect for progressing without the waves of the sea.
There is a dedicated launch area on a safe zone, with strict safety rules.
The wind data shown here comes from ERA5 (via Open-Meteo) over 4 years, reprocessed to reflect realistic conditions.
👉 Average wind has been calibrated to avoid the usual underestimation of models.
👉 Gusts have been corrected by a median ratio to avoid unrealistic extreme values.
👉 Each day is summarized by the median wind (P50) observed during useful hours (8am–8pm), then classified into wind ranges.
👉 The weighted mode mixes average wind and gusts to best reflect felt wind.
The Conque à Mèze works well with winds from all directions thanks to the shape of the Étang de Thau, but the Tramontane from the north (N, NW) is dominant and side-on for the north beach, creating an ideal flat water surface. In south winds (S, SE), it is more side-off, with a thermal in the afternoon in summer that strengthens the breeze.
Launching is done via a safe zone on a sandbar accessible by a valve, with priority for riders coming in and only one kite taking off or landing at a time. Once launched, you can ride wide in the lagoon with an average depth of 4-5 m, with sandbanks for waterstarting in shallow water.
No strong tidal impact like at sea, but levels vary slightly; prefer mid-tide for more space. Navigation zones: center of the lagoon towards the south, avoid the west edges near the ports. The ID Kite school helps with launching, perfect for freeride and freestyle.
The ideal conditions are a Tramontane of 15-25 knots, side-on from the north, for a flat water surface and consistent power. Avoid winds too strong beyond 35 knots for intermediates.
The water surface is generally flat to light chop, thanks to the shelter of the lagoon, ideal for freestyle and freeride. In strong Tramontane winds, a small chop forms but remains manageable.
Currents are absent in the Étang de Thau, making it a perfect spot to learn and ride peacefully. Tides have a low impact, with an amplitude of about 0.5 m, without strong channels to watch out for.
Opt for sizes from 9 to 12 m² in medium Tramontane wind, and 7 to 9 m² when it picks up. For lighter summer thermals, go up to 13-15 m².
The dominant wind is the Tramontane from the north or northwest, steady and strong, up to 30-40 knots in winter. In summer, a southeast thermal picks up in the afternoon, lighter but consistent. All directions work thanks to the lagoon.
The Mediterranean climate of Mèze offers mild temperatures year-round, with hot summers around 25-30°C and mild winters at 10-15°C. The water in the lagoon remains warmer than the sea due to its shallow depth, even in winter when a 4/3 wetsuit is recommended.
The best months for kiting are from March to October, with reliable wind, but it also works in winter with the Tramontane.
The average depth is 4-5 meters, with a sandy bottom and sandbanks to stand on up to 50-100 m from the shore depending on the tide. Perfect for waterstarting in shallow water.
The water in the lagoon is 18-24°C in summer and 12-16°C in winter, warmer than the Mediterranean due to the shallow depth. A lycra is sufficient in the warm season, a neoprene or full wetsuit in winter.
