Marignane
The Jaï beach in Marignane, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, is a kitesurfing spot on the vast Berre pond. Located 30 minutes west of Marseille, it offers a natural space amidst an urban environment, with a sandy beach and lawn stretching 600 meters.
A dedicated kitesurfing area is marked near the Garances parking lot, close to ruins and a stone wall. It is a popular place for its consistent wind, dominated by the Mistral, and its facilities such as kite schools and a nautical base.
Certified Blue Flag since 2016, the beach is monitored in summer and also offers activities like beach volleyball or a free fitness area.

The wind data shown here comes from ERA5 (via Open-Meteo) over 4 years, reprocessed to reflect realistic conditions.
👉 Average wind has been calibrated to avoid the usual underestimation of models.
👉 Gusts have been corrected by a median ratio to avoid unrealistic extreme values.
👉 Each day is summarized by the median wind (P50) observed during useful hours (8am–8pm), then classified into wind ranges.
👉 The weighted mode mixes average wind and gusts to best reflect felt wind.

Useful information
The main wind is the Mistral coming from the north, channeled by the Rhône valley, which blows on-shore very strong, often exceeding 30 knots. In summer, the southwest thermal takes over, more stable and moderate, ideal for foiling on calm water. The ideal orientation is north, northwest, west, with a side-on or side-shore by the prevailing wind.
The navigation area extends over 300 meters in the Berre pond, accessible via a marked navigation channel indicated by yellow buoys in front of the launch area. You must use this channel to exit the buffer zone prohibited for swimming and navigation near the airport and homes. Launching is done with feet in the water on a narrow beach, near the parking lot, moving southwest to avoid obstacles.
The launch area is close to the ruins and the wall, with an onshore wind that requires caution for maneuvers on land. Rig only in the dedicated area, prohibited in front of the northeast homes. In summer, access is regulated with a mandatory sticker via Kite13.
The ideal conditions are a Mistral from north to northwest between 15 and 25 knots for freestyle or freeride on chop. The moderate southwest thermal is perfect for foiling on calm water.
The water surface is often choppy with north wind, with short waves in case of strong gusts. It becomes calmer with the summer thermal. There is no major impact from tides as it is a closed salt pond.
Currents are weak throughout the pond, but more pronounced in the navigation channel. Caution is required during boat entries and exits in this channel bordered by a buffer zone.
Opt for small sizes like 7 to 9 m² with the strong Mistral. In thermal conditions, go up to 10-11 m² to take advantage of lighter winds.
The wind regime is dominated by the north Mistral, powerful and gusty, which accelerates in the Rhône corridor. It blows regularly strong, up to over 30 knots. In summer, the southwest thermal arrives in the late afternoon, more consistent and less violent.
The Mediterranean climate provides sessions year-round, with frequent wind due to the exposed location. Temperatures are mild in winter (10-15°C) and warm in summer (25-30°C), making practice comfortable outside the hot season.
The depth is gradual with a mostly sandy bottom. You can stand at a good distance from the shore, making it easy to launch.
The pond water remains cool in winter around 12-15°C, ideal with a wetsuit. In summer, it rises to 22-25°C, sometimes without a wetsuit for thermal sessions.
