Leucate
La Franqui is the historic kitesurfing spot in the Mediterranean. Located north of Leucate, between the sea and the lagoon, this iconic beach hosts the Mondial du Vent every year. The setting is spectacular: a vast stretch of sand bordered by cliffs and pine forests, with the Tramontane wind blowing strong and steady. It is a spot that is both technical and magical, perfect for freeride, surfkite, and big air. The atmosphere is sporty and local, with a mix of pros, regulars, and strong wind enthusiasts.

Location
Detailed information
The dominant Tramontane wind (northwest) blows side-offshore at La Franqui, creating a choppy to wavy water surface depending on the wind strength. With an east wind, a side-onshore flow produces small regular waves. The beach is vast, the launch is easy, and the area remains clear. However, the offshore wind requires good control of depowering and upwind riding: the spot is not recommended for beginners in strong Tramontane. On calm days, the sea becomes smooth and fast, ideal for long freeride crossings.
