The Plage des Trois Moutons, located in Lampaul-Ploudalmézeau in northern Brittany, is part of a large area of 2.8 km of continuous beaches between Lampaul-Ploudalmézeau and Saint-Pabu. It is an official kitesurfing spot, appreciated by locals and schools for its fine sand and direct access to the water.
Tréompan is the name given by regulars to this west-facing beach, ideal for sliding sports all year round. A school like Rêve O Kite is established there, with feet in the water, offering courses for all levels.
The beach is particularly attractive with west to northeast winds, with a friendly atmosphere despite summer crowds.
The wind data shown here comes from ERA5 (via Open-Meteo) over 4 years, reprocessed to reflect realistic conditions.
👉 Average wind has been calibrated to avoid the usual underestimation of models.
👉 Gusts have been corrected by a median ratio to avoid unrealistic extreme values.
👉 Each day is summarized by the median wind (P50) observed during useful hours (8am–8pm), then classified into wind ranges.
👉 The weighted mode mixes average wind and gusts to best reflect felt wind.
The spot works well with winds from west to northeast, with northeast being the most favorable for a clean and side-shore water surface. With pure west winds, it is side-on direct on the beach, perfect for easy launches from the sand. The navigation area extends across the entire bay, but be cautious of Sieck Island to the north which creates disturbances with northwest winds, making the water surface more choppy.
Launching is done directly from Plage des Trois Moutons, which is wide and sandy. In summer, from June 1 to September 15, a swimming area is marked by yellow buoys, requiring navigation to the north of the beach where space is more limited – not ideal for beginners. The launch area is then restricted, so it's better to choose calm times.
With rising tide and swell, waves form, excellent for surf-kiting but risky for novices. The water surface is generally choppy to wave depending on the tide and wind, with good side-shore power allowing for riding far offshore without issues.
The ideal conditions are a side-shore wind from the northeast at 15-25 knots, with a smooth and powerful water surface for all tricks.
The water surface varies from chop to wave depending on the swell and tide. With northeast winds, it is flatter and smoother, while west winds bring quick chop and waves on the rise.
Currents are moderate in the bay, influenced by the strong tidal coefficients of Brittany. It is important to monitor tide changes that can accelerate the flow near Sieck Island.
Opt for sizes from 9 to 12 m² in medium wind, and 7 to 9 m² in strong wind, depending on the rider's weight and the tide.
The prevailing wind comes from the northwest to west, typical of northern Brittany, with regular sessions of 15-25 knots. There is no specific local name, but it is the strong Atlantic flow, especially in winter and autumn.
The climate is oceanic, with mild temperatures in summer around 18-22°C and cool in winter around 8-12°C. Windy seasons extend throughout the year, but autumn and winter offer the best conditions for consistent wind.
The depth increases gradually with a predominantly sandy bottom. You can stand a good distance from the shore, ideal for schools and safe launches.
In summer, the water is around 16-18°C, while in winter it drops to 10-12°C. A 5/4 wetsuit is recommended year-round.
