The Moutchic beach, located on the Lacanau lake in Nouvelle-Aquitaine, is a quiet spot bordered by pines and launch areas. It is a tolerated kitesurfing spot outside the summer season, especially when east or southeast winds pick up, which remains rare. Locals go there for calm sessions away from the ocean waves.
Close to Lacanau Océan, this inland body of water offers a contrast to the more exposed coastal spots. There are nautical stops and marked areas for navigation. The atmosphere is peaceful, ideal for those looking to sail without the crowd of the main beach.
The wind data shown here comes from ERA5 (via Open-Meteo) over 4 years, reprocessed to reflect realistic conditions.
👉 Average wind has been calibrated to avoid the usual underestimation of models.
👉 Gusts have been corrected by a median ratio to avoid unrealistic extreme values.
👉 Each day is summarized by the median wind (P50) observed during useful hours (8am–8pm), then classified into wind ranges.
👉 The weighted mode mixes average wind and gusts to best reflect felt wind.
The Moutchic beach spot is oriented for East and Southeast winds, which come directly onto the lake without too many obstacles, but these orientations remain rare. From northwest, dominant in Lacanau, the wind strengthens well along the length of the pond, but the Moutchic area can be more technical due to surrounding trees and turbulence at the launch. The navigation area is delimited by a prefectural order, with a part reserved for teaching near the Talaris marina to the north; avoid crossing the port channel and nautical stops. Launching is done from the dedicated beach, with foot depth assured as the lake is shallow. Outside the season, it is free, but in summer, navigation is regulated on the lake as well as on the ocean, with specific hours. The water remains relatively flat, perfect for freeride or freestyle, but subject to variations depending on wind direction: good from NW, unpleasant or even null from SW or East/SE outside Moutchic.
Ideal conditions are with an east or southeast wind, side-shore at Moutchic, between 15 and 25 knots for a smooth water surface. Northwest also works well on the lake, reinforced by the long fetch of the pond.
The water is generally flat and shallow, with a bottom mixing sand and rocky blocks in places. After heavy rains, flooding can make the edges muddy. Few waves, but chop is possible with side-on wind.
Currents are weak on Lacanau lake, but be careful in the port channel where they can accelerate. Tides do not directly influence this inland body of water, unlike the neighboring ocean. It is important to respect the marked areas to avoid conflicts with other users.
Opt for sizes from 9 to 11 m² for light to moderate winds typical of the lake. In strong northwest thermal, go down to 7-9 m² for control on flat water.
Dominant winds come from the northwest to southwest, with a thermal rising in the early afternoon. From east or southeast, rare but navigable at Moutchic, the wind is more consistent on the lake. The strength varies, but stats show viable sessions year-round with an average score of 62/100.
The climate around Lacanau is oceanic, with mild temperatures year-round: around 10°C in winter and up to 25°C in summer. The seasons stretch, with thermal winds often rising in the afternoon from spring to autumn. The best months for sailing are those with consistent wind, from January to December according to the stats, but the thermal is more reliable from April to October.
The depth is shallow and gradual, with foot depth extending a good distance from the shore on a sandy bottom mixed with rocks. Ideal for beginners, but be cautious of submerged rocks.
Water temperatures in the lake range from 10-15°C in winter to 20-24°C in summer. Cool year-round compared to the ocean, a 4/3 wetsuit is recommended outside the warm season.
