The Grande Plage in La Tranche-sur-Mer, Vendée, is a long stretch of fine sand that extends for several kilometers. It is a popular spot for kiters due to its generous space and easy access from the town.
The setting is lively in season with families and bathers, but locals always find places to kite by searching for the right zones. The atmosphere is friendly, typical of Vendée beaches.
Close to kitesurfing schools, it is a convenient place to progress or improve.
The wind data shown here comes from ERA5 (via Open-Meteo) over 4 years, reprocessed to reflect realistic conditions.
👉 Average wind has been calibrated to avoid the usual underestimation of models.
👉 Gusts have been corrected by a median ratio to avoid unrealistic extreme values.
👉 Each day is summarized by the median wind (P50) observed during useful hours (8am–8pm), then classified into wind ranges.
👉 The weighted mode mixes average wind and gusts to best reflect felt wind.
The Grande Plage offers a water surface oriented towards the west, ideal for northwest winds that are side-shore from the right side of the beach, providing consistent and clean wind for freestyle or freeride. South and west winds are also favorable, in side-on or light onshore, but avoid southwest winds which make the spot unusable.
Launching is done directly from the wide and clean sand, with a spacious take-off area at the beach edge, provided you respect the marked zones. The navigation area extends several hundred meters offshore, but remain vigilant near the channels and pontoons that structure the beach.
Depending on the tides, the water surface varies: at low tide, the sandy bottom emerges and the spot becomes more technical with flat areas for wakestyle; at high tide, the water rises and allows for smoother navigation with some chop. In summer, the thermal can pick up in the afternoon, making sessions more consistent.
The ideal conditions are a northwest wind at 18-25 knots, side-shore, with moderate swell for a clean and manageable water surface.
The water surface is often choppy with some short waves under west-southwest swell, but remains suitable for kiting. In side-shore wind, it can become relatively flat at the edge.
Currents are generally weak along the beach, but they intensify near the access channels to the sea. The tides are semi-diurnal with a significant coefficient in Vendée, which quickly changes the water surface.
Opt for sizes from 9 to 11m² in light thermal wind, and go down to 7-9m² when it blows over 20 knots.
The prevailing wind comes from the northwest, often thermal in summer afternoons, with strengths between 15 and 25 knots. There is no specific local name, but it is typical frontal wind of the Atlantic coast, consistent from May to September.
The Vendée climate is oceanic, mild all year round with average temperatures around 10°C in winter and 25°C in summer. The intermediate seasons from April to October are the most pleasant for kiting without a full wetsuit.
The depth is gradual with a mostly sandy bottom. You can stand a good distance from the shore, ideal for relaunching.
The water is cool in winter around 10-12°C, rising to 18-22°C in summer. A shorty wetsuit is sufficient from June to September.
