Gouville-sur-Mer

The beach of Gouville-sur-Mer, located on the Normandy coast in front of the campsite, is a popular spot for kiters due to its open space and easy access. It is an ideal place for beginners thanks to its shallow waters and friendly atmosphere fostered by the Pôle Kitesurf Normandie.

Close to Agon-Coutainville, it offers a beautiful stretch of fine sand bordered by dunes, perfect for launching and calm sessions. Locals often come here to progress in an authentic setting without too much crowd.

Monitored in season, the beach has a large free parking lot and a first aid station, making it convenient for all levels.

The wind data shown here comes from ERA5 (via Open-Meteo) over 4 years, reprocessed to reflect realistic conditions.
👉 Average wind has been calibrated to avoid the usual underestimation of models.
👉 Gusts have been corrected by a median ratio to avoid unrealistic extreme values.
👉 Each day is summarized by the median wind (P50) observed during useful hours (8am–8pm), then classified into wind ranges.
👉 The weighted mode mixes average wind and gusts to best reflect felt wind.

  • 🟢 10–16 kts: light but sailable wind (especially on foil).
  • 🟡 16–22 kts: ideal range, comfortable conditions for most.
  • 🔴 22–28 kts: strong wind, reserved for experienced riders.
  • 🟣 28+ kts: extreme conditions, committed riding.

Riding conditions

The beach of Gouville-sur-Mer is oriented west, which favors side-on or side-shore winds from the NW or W, the most effective for riding without risking drifting too far. Launching is done directly from the fine sand in front of the campsite, with a wide and clear take-off area, ideal for beginners who need space to practice.

The water state varies greatly with the tides: at low tide, the sea recedes very far on a gentle slope, creating a vast but shallow space where you can stand for several hundred meters, perfect for initiation and kitefoiling. At high tide, the water rises and the spot becomes more dynamic with a more consistent water state for jumps and speed.

The navigation area extends about 1 km wide, but you must remain vigilant about the limits to avoid monitored swimming areas in summer. Sessions are optimal with winds of 15-25 knots, and the nomadic school of the Pôle Kitesurf adapts the spots according to the day's conditions, such as the nearby beach of Agon-Coutainville if needed. A maximum of 10 people is recommended to avoid overcrowding.

Ideal wind
Ndominant
SWdominant
Wdominant
NWdominant

The ideal conditions are winds of 18 to 28 knots from the NW or W, side-on, for good pull and controlled jumps without excessive drift.

Sea state

The water state is often choppy with a slight ripple due to side-shore winds, but it remains navigable and without significant waves. At low tide, it is very calm and flat over a large area.

Sea currents

Currents are generally weak on this exposed beach, but they can intensify near the channels at low tide. The large tides in the region strongly influence the flow, with high coefficients that pull the water very far away.

Recommended kite size

Opt for sizes of 9 to 12 m² in typical conditions of 15-25 knots, and go down to 7-9 m² when the wind strengthens beyond 25 knots.

Weather & wind

The prevailing winds come from the northwest or west, with an average strength of 15 to 25 knots, particularly consistent in autumn and winter. No specific local name, but this is the typical regime of the English Channel that ensures reliable sessions all year round.

Climate

The Normandy climate is oceanic, with cool temperatures year-round: around 10°C in winter and up to 20-22°C in summer. The seasons are marked by frequent rains, but the winds remain consistent, making the spot usable even outside the summer season.

Depth

The depth is very gradual with a completely sandy bottom. You can stand up to more than 200 meters from the shore at low tide, which secures falls for beginners.

Water temperature

The water remains cold: 8-12°C in winter and spring, 15-18°C in summer. A full wetsuit is essential year-round, with a 5/4 mm neoprene outside the season.
