The Goêrem beach, located on the peninsula of Gâvres in Brittany, is a vast stretch of fine sand to the west of the village. It is a popular spot for local kitesurfers due to its varied exposure and relative calm outside the summer season.
Close to the center of Gâvres, it offers direct access from the rue de l’Église via a few stairs. The beach remains uncrowded even in summer, with a few houses along the edge and an authentic atmosphere facing the Lorient harbor.
Ideal for freeride and small waves, it attracts independent riders and local kite schools.
The wind data shown here comes from ERA5 (via Open-Meteo) over 4 years, reprocessed to reflect realistic conditions.
👉 Average wind has been calibrated to avoid the usual underestimation of models.
👉 Gusts have been corrected by a median ratio to avoid unrealistic extreme values.
👉 Each day is summarized by the median wind (P50) observed during useful hours (8am–8pm), then classified into wind ranges.
👉 The weighted mode mixes average wind and gusts to best reflect felt wind.
Goêrem beach works well with winds from North-West, West, South-West, South, South-East, and East, often in side-shore or side-on depending on the dominant direction coming from the sea. With west or south-west wind, it is perfect side-shore for smooth freeride sessions, while east brings a more onshore wind with a choppy water surface.
The launch area is on the well-sanded western part, accessible at all tides except in summer when bathers occupy the central zone; one then moves to the east near the rock-filled jetty, but avoid 2 hours before and after high tide. The navigation area extends over 500m of beach with good offshore width, but be cautious of downwind under the dune with south wind which creates tricky turbulence at take-off.
At low tide, the gentle slope allows for easy learning with long footing; at mid-tide, the water surface is optimal for freeride and punchy waves on the rise. Take-offs and landings are done on the narrow beach, vigilance is mandatory near the departmental road that runs along the spot.
The ideal conditions are a wind of 15-25 knots from the West or South-West at mid-tide, for consistent side-shore and manageable water surface. Avoid pure North which is too offshore for beginners.
The water surface is generally choppy to flat with side-shore wind, with small waves at high tide. At low tide, it is flat, ideal for freestyle; at high tide, it becomes more choppy with a risk of short waves.
Currents remain weak on Goêrem beach thanks to the protection of the tombolo, but they intensify near the passes to the Lorient harbor. Tides are significant with high coefficients that quickly change the water surface.
Opt for sizes from 9 to 12m² in standard conditions of 15-20 knots; go down to 7-9m² in strong wind of 25+ knots, and up to 13-15m² on light days.
The dominant wind comes from the West and South-West, often consistent from 15-20 knots in the afternoon. There is no specific local name, but it is the classic Breton thermal that picks up strength around midday.
East and South directions bring flatter sessions, while North-West is a powerful side-off for waves.
The oceanic climate of the Gâvres peninsula offers mild temperatures year-round, around 10-15°C in winter and 18-25°C in summer. The intermediate seasons are ideal for kiting with little rain and consistent wind.
In southern Brittany, summers are warm but windy, while winter remains manageable despite the humid cold.
The depth is gradual with a predominantly sandy bottom, safe footing up to 50-100m from the shore at low tide. Rocky areas appear near the eastern jetty.
The water remains cool year-round: 10-13°C in winter and spring, 15-18°C in summer, 14-16°C in autumn. A 5/4mm wetsuit is mandatory outside the warm season.
