Fréjus

The Esclamandes beach, located in Saint-Aygulf near Fréjus on the Côte d'Azur, is a true kitesurfing temple in the Mediterranean. This beach of 600 meters of fine sand stretches along the coast with three artificial breakwaters that protect the swimming areas. It is a spot appreciated by riders for its consistent conditions and dedicated kitesurfing infrastructure.

The kite preparation area is located to the north of the beach, on a spacious area that allows rigging and launching in good conditions. During the high season, a Beach Marshal ensures safety and the site is exclusively reserved for kitesurfing. The beach is divided into several zones: family, naturist, reserved for kitesurfing, and for dogs, making it a spot accessible to all audiences.

The wind data shown here comes from ERA5 (via Open-Meteo) over 4 years, reprocessed to reflect realistic conditions.
👉 Average wind has been calibrated to avoid the usual underestimation of models.
👉 Gusts have been corrected by a median ratio to avoid unrealistic extreme values.
👉 Each day is summarized by the median wind (P50) observed during useful hours (8am–8pm), then classified into wind ranges.
👉 The weighted mode mixes average wind and gusts to best reflect felt wind.

  • 🟢 10–16 kts: light but sailable wind (especially on foil).
  • 🟡 16–22 kts: ideal range, comfortable conditions for most.
  • 🔴 22–28 kts: strong wind, reserved for experienced riders.
  • 🟣 28+ kts: extreme conditions, committed riding.

Riding conditions

The spot mainly works with a thermal wind from the south and an east wind. The northeast to southwest orientation offers the best conditions, with side-shore to side-on wind depending on the periods. In contrast, with the Mistral (northwest), the wind blows offshore, making navigation dangerous and to be avoided.

In the high summer season, a channel marked by yellow buoys allows access to 300 meters offshore. This channel is bordered by buffer zones prohibited for navigation and swimming for safety reasons. Rigging and navigation are strictly limited to the area dedicated to kitesurfing in summer. The gradual depth and fine sand facilitate take-offs and landings.

With an east wind, some waves and a marked shore-break can complicate departures. At certain times, the Argens may overflow onto the beach, reducing the take-off space. The spot is accessible all year round, but conditions vary according to seasonal wind regimes.

The ideal conditions are met with a thermal wind from the south in summer, which offers very good consistent sessions. A wind from northeast to southwest creates optimal side-shore conditions for practice. East winds bring some waves but remain manageable with good technique. Absolutely to be avoided: the Mistral (northwest) which makes navigation dangerous.

Sea state

The water surface is generally flat to choppy depending on wind conditions. In summer, with the thermal from the south, the conditions are smooth and consistent. With an east wind, waves and a marked shore-break appear. The shallow waters and fine sand create a stable environment for practice.

Sea currents

The current is generally weak at Esclamandes beach. However, near the marked channel in high season, the current can be stronger. The buffer zones bordering the channel are prohibited for navigation to maintain a safety margin in case of problems on the water.

Recommended kite size

The recommended kite sizes vary according to wind conditions. With the regular thermal from the south in summer, kites of 9 to 11 meters are generally appropriate. In lighter east winds, kites of 12 to 14 meters may be necessary. For experienced riders seeking thrills in stronger winds, kites of 7 to 9 meters are suitable.

Weather & wind

The main wind regime consists of the thermal from the south in summer, which generally offers good sessions. The east wind brings some waves but requires good board support to move away from the shore, as it is on-shore. The Mistral (northwest) blows offshore and makes navigation dangerous. Winds from northeast to southwest are the ideal orientations for safe practice.

Climate

The Côte d'Azur enjoys a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers. Winters are mild and precipitation is concentrated in autumn and winter. The spot offers conditions for practice all year round, with better consistency of thermal winds in summer.

Depth

The depth is gradual with a sandy bottom, ideal for kitesurfing. You can stand up to about 50 meters from the shore, allowing for a large safe navigation area. The shallow waters near the shore facilitate take-offs and landings, particularly for beginners.

Water temperature

The water temperature in the Mediterranean varies by season. In summer (June to September), the water is warm, between 22 and 26°C, allowing for comfortable practice without a wetsuit. In winter (December to February), the temperature drops to 8-12°C, requiring a 3/2 or 4/3 wetsuit depending on sensitivity to cold. The intermediate seasons (March-May and October-November) offer temperatures between 12 and 20°C.

⚠️ Risks & Safety

  • Rigging and navigation outside the kitesurfing area are strictly prohibited in summer for safety reasons with bathers.

  • The Mistral (northwest) makes navigation dangerous as the wind pushes offshore and does not allow for easy return to the beach.

  • In high season, it is mandatory to use the channel marked by yellow buoys to reach beyond 300 meters offshore.

  • The buffer zones bordering the channel are prohibited for navigation and swimming, serving as a safety margin.

  • At certain times, the Argens may overflow onto the beach, reducing the take-off space and requiring increased vigilance.

  • A Beach Marshal monitors the site in high season and ensures compliance with safety rules.
