France
Fos-sur-Mer
The Cavaou beach, located in Fos-sur-Mer in Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, is a large stretch of sand over a kilometer long. Lined with free parking, it attracts kitesurfers despite the factories and oil tankers in the background. It's an industrial spot that delivers heavy conditions for experienced riders.
The spot is favored with a South-East wind where conditions become powerful with marked waves. The launch is easy on the wide beach, and there is space to ride without too many people. You can also combine kite sessions and sunbathing with family.
Close to Marseille, it's a must for intermediates and advanced riders looking for a challenge on a varied water surface.

The wind data shown here comes from ERA5 (via Open-Meteo) over 4 years, reprocessed to reflect realistic conditions.
👉 Average wind has been calibrated to avoid the usual underestimation of models.
👉 Gusts have been corrected by a median ratio to avoid unrealistic extreme values.
👉 Each day is summarized by the median wind (P50) observed during useful hours (8am–8pm), then classified into wind ranges.
👉 The weighted mode mixes average wind and gusts to best reflect felt wind.
- 🟢 10–16 kts: light but sailable wind (especially on foil).
- 🟡 16–22 kts: ideal range, comfortable conditions for most.
- 🔴 22–28 kts: strong wind, reserved for experienced riders.
- 🟣 28+ kts: extreme conditions, committed riding.

Useful information
The spot mainly works with a South-East wind with a perfect side-shore orientation that makes the water surface super flat and powerful, ideal for freeride or wave sessions. With this wind, the riding area extends along the entire length of the beach, with direct access to the sand without major obstacles. Stay vigilant for the swell that can rise and for other riders, especially in SE where it can get crowded.
With a West wind, the orientation is side-on with light thermals, perfect for calmer sessions but this happens rarely. Be cautious of the Mistral (Northwest) which becomes side-off and irregular, risking sending you offshore or towards industrial areas. The launch area is right on the beach, wide and sandy, with parking nearby for easy loading and unloading.
Tides do not significantly influence conditions, the water surface remains navigable at all times. Prefer the central part of the beach for launching, avoid the ends where the shorebreak can be violent with swell. It's a versatile spot: flat in SE, chop or small waves depending on wind strength.
Ideal conditions are a South-East wind at 20-30 knots, side-shore, for a flat and powerful water surface with rideable waves. Force 5-6 Beaufort minimum for advanced riders, with moderate swell for freestyle or wave.
The water surface varies from flat to choppy depending on the wind, with small to medium waves from the South-East and swell. It's shallow near the shore, ideal for getting back up after a fall. The bottom is sandy everywhere, with no reefs to worry about.
Currents are generally weak at Cavaou beach. However, they can intensify near industrial areas or adjacent channels, especially with offshore Mistral winds. Mediterranean tides are weak, with no major impact on navigation.
Opt for sizes from 9 to 11m² in light West winds or at the beginning of the session. Switch to 7-9m² for powerful SE winds around 25 knots. Advanced riders go down to 6m² in strong gusts.
The dominant wind is the Mistral from the Northwest, strong and gusty, but less favorable for kiting. The South-East is the most regular and powerful local thermal, perfect for explosive days. West winds bring light thermals in a side-on direction, but they are rarer.
The Mediterranean climate of Fos-sur-Mer offers warm summers around 25-30°C and mild winters around 10-15°C. Sessions are possible year-round thanks to regular winds, with the best conditions from spring to autumn. The water remains temperate even in winter, and the region enjoys over 300 sunny days a year.
The depth is gradual with a completely sandy bottom. You can stand up to about fifty meters from the shore, perfect for relaunching and learning.
The water is around 14-16°C in winter and spring, rising to 20-24°C in summer and autumn. A shorty wetsuit is sufficient from June to September, while a 4/3 mm wetsuit is needed for the rest of the year.
