The Kerhillio beach in Erdeven, Brittany, is a family-friendly sandy beach north of the Bay of Penthièvre. It offers stunning views of the Quiberon peninsula and Belle-Île-en-Mer. It is a well-known spot for kitesurfing and land sailing, with designated areas throughout the year.
Very long, it attracts riders for its generous space and southwest orientation. Local schools offer lessons all year round, and the spot mixes freeride, waves, and foil depending on the conditions.
Popular with locals and tourists, it remains pleasant thanks to its beach that stretches for kilometers without major obstacles.
The wind data shown here comes from ERA5 (via Open-Meteo) over 4 years, reprocessed to reflect realistic conditions.
👉 Average wind has been calibrated to avoid the usual underestimation of models.
👉 Gusts have been corrected by a median ratio to avoid unrealistic extreme values.
👉 Each day is summarized by the median wind (P50) observed during useful hours (8am–8pm), then classified into wind ranges.
👉 The weighted mode mixes average wind and gusts to best reflect felt wind.
The spot is oriented southwest, ideal for a wind from the south to west-northwest sector, providing a perfect side-on for navigation. The kitesurfing area is marked in the south-east part of the beach, beyond the yellow cylindrical buoys; this is where you rig and launch, facing the two markers on the sand. The water is shallow near the shore, suitable for beginners and easy relaunches.
The water surface is generally flat to chop with west winds, protected from swell except when it comes from the south where it comes in well and forms accessible waves for experienced riders, especially at high tide. At low tide, the beach widens significantly, perfect for rigging with plenty of space, but the water remains navigable everywhere. It is an excellent freeride and bump & jump spot, with enough room not to interfere with each other, even in high season if the zones are respected.
No obstacles like rocks or trees offshore, just a few menhirs near the dune. Schools like Rêve de Glisse or NKS are based there and monitor the sessions.
Ideal conditions are a side-on west or south wind between 15 and 25 knots, steady for flat freeride or moderate waves at high tide. Perfect when there aren't too many people.
The water surface is flat with light west winds, turns to chop with more strength, and forms waves at high tide when the south swell comes in. The bottom is sandy everywhere, with little swell except from the south, perfect for freeride or first waves.
Currents are generally weak on this west-facing beach. Tides are significant in Brittany, but the spot remains navigable at any level of high or low tide without major channels to worry about.
Opt for kite sizes of 9 to 12 m² for typical west winds of 15-25 knots. 7-9 m² for stronger days, 11-14 m² in light summer thermals.
Dominant winds come from the west sector, regular and strong due to Atlantic depressions. There is often talk of a local micro-climate that enhances the wind. The strength typically ranges from 15-30 knots, side-on from southeast to west-northwest.
The Breton climate is oceanic, with mild temperatures year-round: around 10-15°C in winter and 18-25°C in summer. Autumns and winters bring regular windy depressions until late winter. In summer, thermals rise on sunny days.
All months are good for kiting thanks to Erdeven's micro-climate, with a high UV index in summer: sunscreen and sunglasses are mandatory.
The water is shallow near the shore with a gradual sandy bottom. You can stand for a good distance, ideal for learning and relaunching.
Water temperatures range from 10-13°C in winter to 16-20°C in summer. A 5/4 mm wetsuit is needed almost all year round, with a shorty in August.
