Châtelaillon-Plage

The beach of Châtelaillon-Plage, in Charente-Maritime, is a large sandy bay ideal for beginners. There is a nice clear beach for the take-off and landing of kites. It is a family-friendly spot with a relaxed atmosphere, perfect for progressing safely.

The spot is navigable all year round, but you need to walk a bit at low tide. During high coefficients, you cross mud before reaching deeper water. Locals appreciate its accessibility and calm water when conditions are good.

Prohibited for kitesurfing from June 15 to September 15, so prefer the other seasons to kite without worry.

The wind data shown here comes from ERA5 (via Open-Meteo) over 4 years, reprocessed to reflect realistic conditions.
👉 Average wind has been calibrated to avoid the usual underestimation of models.
👉 Gusts have been corrected by a median ratio to avoid unrealistic extreme values.
👉 Each day is summarized by the median wind (P50) observed during useful hours (8am–8pm), then classified into wind ranges.
👉 The weighted mode mixes average wind and gusts to best reflect felt wind.

  • 🟢 10–16 kts: light but sailable wind (especially on foil).
  • 🟡 16–22 kts: ideal range, comfortable conditions for most.
  • 🔴 22–28 kts: strong wind, reserved for experienced riders.
  • 🟣 28+ kts: extreme conditions, committed riding.

Riding conditions

The spot works well with winds from Northwest to Southwest, which are often side-shore from the left of the beach, making navigation stable and predictable. At high tide, especially during high coefficients, the water surface is wide and you can kite directly from the beach without walking. At low tide, you need to carry your gear 100 to 200 meters depending on the coefficient, with mud at the end of the area, but once in the water it is pleasant with standing depth for small and medium coefficients.

The launch area is on the center-left of the beach, clear for take-off. Stay in the bay and do not exceed the imaginary line extending the port's dam to the left, marked by oyster parks. The navigation area is spacious, suitable for freeride, with small choppy waves in strong wind. Kites launch better to the left, near the dam but without getting too close.

In North or South winds, it is more onshore but always safe thanks to the protected bay. Avoid going out in East wind as it is less consistent. The water is azure and clear, with a flat bottom to chop depending on wind strength.

Ideal wind
NWdominant
SW
Wdominant

Ideal conditions are a side-shore wind of 15-25 knots coming from NW or SW, with medium to high tide for easy access to the water. This creates a choppy but manageable water surface, perfect for progression.

Sea state

The water surface is choppy with small waves of 0.5 to 1m in established wind, becoming flatter in light winds or high tide. Some more formed waves occur if the ocean swell comes well into the bay.

Sea currents

Currents are generally weak in the bay, but they strengthen near the port channel at low tide. Prefer high tide to avoid any unwanted drift. Tides have a strong coefficient in the Atlantic, significantly impacting the navigable space.

Recommended kite size

Opt for sizes from 9 to 12m² in typical conditions of 15-20 knots. Go larger, 11-14m², for light winds under 12 knots, and drop to 7-9m² if it gusts beyond 25 knots.

Weather & wind

The winds are frontal, typical of the Atlantic coast, mainly coming from N, S, SW, NW. They are consistent with an average strength of 15-25 knots, with possible gusts during depression passages. No specific local name, but we rely on Atlantic depressions for consistent days.

Climate

The climate is mild oceanic, with warm summers around 25°C and cool winters around 8-10°C. Rainfall is regular but sessions often remain feasible. It is a temperate area ideal for kiting all year round without extremes.

Depth

The depth is gradual with a mostly sandy bottom. You can stand up to 50-100m from the shore at low tide during low coefficients, ideal for beginners. Deeper offshore.

Water temperature

The water is around 18-22°C in summer (June-September), requiring a shorty. In winter (December-March), it drops to 10-14°C, with a recommended 5/3mm combo. Spring and autumn are at 14-18°C.
