Cabourg - Plage de Cabourg
France
Cabourg
The beach of Cabourg, located on the Normandy coast, is a popular spot for kitesurfers due to its shallow waters and proximity to the Le Menhir Normandie Kite school. Just 50 meters from the shop, Cap Cabourg offers easy access and a friendly atmosphere favored by locals and beginner riders. There is a beautiful stretch of fine sand, ideal for relaxing between sessions.
Nearby spots like Franceville 4 km away and Houlgate 2 km away complement the offering, with varied conditions depending on the winds. Cabourg remains the perfect home spot to progress safely, thanks to its large sandbanks that protect from waves at low tide.
The wind data shown here comes from ERA5 (via Open-Meteo) over 4 years, reprocessed to reflect realistic conditions.
👉 Average wind has been calibrated to avoid the usual underestimation of models.
👉 Gusts have been corrected by a median ratio to avoid unrealistic extreme values.
👉 Each day is summarized by the median wind (P50) observed during useful hours (8am–8pm), then classified into wind ranges.
👉 The weighted mode mixes average wind and gusts to best reflect felt wind.
- 🟢 10–16 kts: light but sailable wind (especially on foil).
- 🟡 16–22 kts: ideal range, comfortable conditions for most.
- 🔴 22–28 kts: strong wind, reserved for experienced riders.
- 🟣 28+ kts: extreme conditions, committed riding.

Useful information
The Cabourg spot is oriented facing west, which means that northwest winds come in side-on port along the entire coast, providing a steady water surface with a small swell. For southwest, head towards the bay of Salenelles where the wind is side-on on glassy water in the lagoons at high tide, perfect for safe navigation. Winds from north and northeast are also excellent, side-on starboard, often stronger than expected and steady.
Launching is done directly from the beach at Cap Cabourg, with a wide and clear take-off area. The navigation zone extends over shallow waters protected by sandbanks at low tide, ideal for beginners; at high tide, the space opens up but remains safe. In summer, a dedicated area is marked for kites, allowed year-round if rules are respected. Be cautious of other users like bathers during peak season.
Ideal conditions are with northwest or northeast winds between 15 and 25 knots, side-on, for a steady and safe water surface. Avoid pure onshore winds which can make the spot more exposed.
The water surface is chop with small waves, protected by sandbanks at low tide that calm the waves. At high tide, it opens up with a slight chop depending on the wind. Conditions remain manageable thanks to the shallow water.
Currents are generally weak on Cabourg beach, but significant tides in Calvados can create stronger flows near the channels. At low tide, vast sandy flats emerge, reducing currents. Always check the tide schedules to anticipate.
Opt for sizes from 9 to 11 m² in moderate winds of 15-20 knots, and go down to 7-9 m² when gusts exceed 25 knots. In light summer thermals, an 11-12 m² works well.
The prevailing winds come from the northwest, steady and side-on, often accompanied by a small swell. The southwest pushes towards the bay of Salenelles for glassy sessions. The northeast, rarer, is strong and steady, while a summer thermal can rise up to 17 knots in the late afternoon.
The Normandy climate in Cabourg is oceanic, with mild temperatures in summer around 20°C and cooler in winter around 5-10°C. The intermediate seasons from March to November offer the best balance for kitesurfing, with longer days and reliable wind. Winter can be windy but cold and humid.
The depth is shallow with a sandy bottom, allowing for long periods of standing due to the sandbanks. Perfect for learning up to 50-100 meters from the shore at low tide.
The water is cool in winter around 8-10°C, rising to 15-18°C in summer. Plan for a 5/3 mm wetsuit year-round, and switch to a 4/3 in July-August.
