Bonifacio

The Piantarella beach, located at the southern tip of Corsica facing the Lavezzi Islands, is an iconic lagoon with its sandbank and translucent turquoise water. It is a spot just a few minutes' drive from Bonifacio, popular for its paradisiacal setting and ideal kitesurf conditions with an east wind.

The sandbank connects the island of Piana to the beach, creating a protected area where you can stand almost everywhere. However, be careful in July and August, when the beach is very crowded with tourists and the space for kites is too limited for practice.

Schools like Bonifacio Windsurf offer activities there, but the spot remains wild and authentic outside of high season.

The wind data shown here comes from ERA5 (via Open-Meteo) over 4 years, reprocessed to reflect realistic conditions.
👉 Average wind has been calibrated to avoid the usual underestimation of models.
👉 Gusts have been corrected by a median ratio to avoid unrealistic extreme values.
👉 Each day is summarized by the median wind (P50) observed during useful hours (8am–8pm), then classified into wind ranges.
👉 The weighted mode mixes average wind and gusts to best reflect felt wind.

  • 🟢 10–16 kts: light but sailable wind (especially on foil).
  • 🟡 16–22 kts: ideal range, comfortable conditions for most.
  • 🔴 22–28 kts: strong wind, reserved for experienced riders.
  • 🟣 28+ kts: extreme conditions, committed riding.

Riding conditions

The spot mainly works with an East or Northeast wind, coming in side-on or side-shore from the southeast-facing beach, offering extra flat water in the protected lagoon. In west wind, it is technical and sheltered, to be avoided except for experts who go offshore.

Launching is done directly from the fine sandy beach, with a wide but crowded take-off area in summer. The navigation area is bounded by the sandbank to the south and the islets, staying in the lagoon for perfect flat water, or heading towards the Lavezzi in east wind for more space.

Tides have little impact as the water is shallow everywhere, you can stand up to 100-200 meters from the shore according to sources. Prefer afternoons for thermal breezes in summer, and avoid the mistral (northwest) which makes the spot unusable.

Ideal wind
NE
E
SE

The ideal conditions are an East or Northeast wind between 15 and 25 knots, side-on, for perfect flat water and easy navigation in the lagoon.

Sea state

The water surface is extra flat in the lagoon, thanks to its almost closed configuration, perfect for freestyle or learning. A few rocks dot the bottom, which should be spotted before heading out.

Sea currents

Currents are generally weak in the protected lagoon, but they can strengthen near the sandbank or towards the Lavezzi Islands. Tides are moderate in the Mediterranean, with a low amplitude that does not significantly impact navigation.

Recommended kite size

Opt for sizes from 9 to 12 m² in typical summer conditions, smaller (7-9 m²) in strong east winds, and larger (11-14 m²) on light days.

Weather & wind

The prevailing wind comes from the east or northeast in summer, in the form of thermal breezes that pick up in the afternoon and can reach 15-25 knots. The west is more frequent off-season, but less favorable at Piantarella.

The spot works year-round, but optimal conditions are found in summer with stable side-shore winds.

Climate

The Mediterranean climate of southern Corsica offers hot and dry summers from May to September, with air temperatures between 23 and 32°C. Winters are mild, around 10-15°C, but windier and rainier.

The best season for comfortable kitesurfing is from June to September, with well-warmed water and regular thermal winds.

Depth

The depth is very gradual with a mostly sandy bottom. You can stand up to 100-200 meters from the shore in the lagoon.

Water temperature

In June, the water is around 22°C, rising to 25°C in July and can reach 27°C in September after summer. Off-season, it drops to about 15-18°C.
