The beach of Barcaggio, located at the northern tip of Cap Corse, is one of the most beautiful beaches in Haute-Corse. Characterized by its fine white sand and crystal clear waters, it offers an exceptional natural setting surrounded by dunes and Mediterranean maquis. It is a spot favored by kitesurfers for its open water and regular conditions.
Barcaggio stands out for its easy accessibility by car and its authentic atmosphere, away from crowded spots. The beach is long and spacious, providing excellent take-off and navigation space. The shallow waters for several hundred meters make it an ideal place for progression, while experienced riders enjoy the more dynamic conditions offshore.
The wind data shown here comes from ERA5 (via Open-Meteo) over 4 years, reprocessed to reflect realistic conditions.
👉 Average wind has been calibrated to avoid the usual underestimation of models.
👉 Gusts have been corrected by a median ratio to avoid unrealistic extreme values.
👉 Each day is summarized by the median wind (P50) observed during useful hours (8am–8pm), then classified into wind ranges.
👉 The weighted mode mixes average wind and gusts to best reflect felt wind.
The dominant wind at Barcaggio comes from the west, creating side-shore to side-on conditions very favorable for kitesurfing. The water surface is generally flat to slightly choppy depending on conditions, with small, easy-to-manage waves. The launch area is spacious and clear, without major obstacles. The wind is regular and consistent, particularly in summer, making the spot accessible year-round. Conditions are generally more stable in the late morning and early afternoon. It is recommended to navigate in the central area of the bay, avoiding rocky areas to the north and remaining attentive to wind variations according to coastal relief.
Ideal conditions occur with a westerly wind of 14 to 18 knots, thermal and regular. These conditions allow for smooth and progressive navigation, ideal for all levels. A northeasterly wind of the same intensity also works well, although it is rarer in summer. The most predictable sessions take place between 11 AM and 5 PM, when the thermal is established.
The water surface is flat to slightly choppy depending on wind and tide conditions. In light conditions, the water is very smooth, ideal for learning and tricks. When the wind picks up, small, easy waves appear, offering a bit more dynamics without being intimidating. The water generally remains clear and calm, making it a very accessible spot.
The current at Barcaggio is generally weak to moderate, making the spot safe for navigation. The bay is well protected and currents do not pose a major problem for kitesurfers. Tides are not pronounced in the Mediterranean, with a very low tidal range that does not significantly affect navigation conditions.
For an average wind of 14 to 18 knots, a kite of 9 to 11 m² is generally appropriate. In light conditions (10-12 knots), a kite of 12 to 14 m² may be necessary. For windier days (18-22 knots), a kite of 7 to 9 m² offers better control. It is recommended to have at least two kites to adapt to seasonal and daily wind variations.
The wind regime at Barcaggio is dominated by westerly winds, particularly regular and thermal in summer. These thermal winds usually pick up in the late morning and strengthen in the afternoon, offering predictable and progressive sessions. Northeasterly winds are rarer in summer but can occur in the shoulder seasons. The wind strength generally varies between 12 and 20 knots in normal conditions, with gusts reaching up to 25 knots on particularly windy days.
Barcaggio enjoys a typical Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and mild winters. Summer temperatures range between 25 and 30°C, while in winter they generally remain between 8 and 12°C. The spot operates year-round, but the best conditions are concentrated between June and September, when the thermal wind is the most regular and predictable.
The depth at Barcaggio is gradual and very favorable for kitesurfing. You can stand for several hundred meters from the shore, with a stable and regular sandy bottom. The depth increases gradually, allowing beginners to stay in shallow water while providing enough space for experienced riders. The sandy bottom without major obstacles makes navigation safe and comfortable.
The water temperature varies significantly by season. In summer (June to September), the water reaches 22 to 25°C, allowing for navigation in shorts and lycra. In autumn and spring (April-May and October-November), the temperature ranges between 16 and 20°C, requiring a lycra or shorty. In winter (December to March), the water cools to 12 to 15°C, making a thin or full wetsuit necessary for extended sessions.
