Playa Bozo in Cabarete is one of the most accessible kitesurfing spots in the Dominican Republic. Located in the bay of Cabarete, this spot offers a wide sandy beach protected by a coral reef about a kilometer from the shore. It is a very busy place, with several kite schools and a friendly atmosphere where a certain level of safety prevails due to the water layout.
The beach stretches for a good length, allowing riders of all levels to find their space. The spot combines choppy conditions in the bay with waves on the reef, offering varied possibilities depending on your riding style. It is a true playground for freestyle, foiling, and wave riding enthusiasts.

chopchopPlaya Bozo benefits from a regular side-onshore wind coming from the northeast and east, ensuring maximum safety in case of trouble. The wind is generally light in the morning (less than 15 knots) and good in the afternoon between 15 and 30 knots, from 12:30 to 17:30. The further you go out to sea, the more constant and steady the wind becomes, particularly on the reef where conditions are the cleanest.
Launching takes place on a medium-sized beach with very accessible soft sand. However, be cautious of the strong breaking bar which can be demanding, especially for beginners. Inside the bay, the water is very choppy, ideal for tricks and jumps. The reef located about a kilometer away offers waves of 1 to 3 meters that serve as natural ramps for freestyle or playground for wave riding. The further you go into the bay, the less constant the wind remains and the more conditions become gusty in the late afternoon when the wind shifts more to the northeast.
The kite zone is just southwest of the windsurf zone (Estrella), so this separation must be respected. Also, be aware of swimmers and their designated areas that share the beach with kiters.
The ideal conditions for Playa Bozo are between 15 and 25 knots, which corresponds exactly to the usual wind regime of the spot in the afternoon. A regular and non-gusty side-onshore wind is preferred. These conditions allow for safe and enjoyable practice for all levels, with the guarantee of floating back to the beach in case of trouble.
The water inside the bay is very choppy, with small waves that serve as natural ramps for tricks and jumps. This water texture is perfect for freestyle. Outside, on the reef located about a kilometer away, you will find waves of 1 to 3 meters that offer excellent wave riding conditions, particularly in winter. The breaking bar can be strong, especially in the late afternoon, but it decreases as you move further into the bay.
The currents at Playa Bozo are generally weak to moderate in the bay. However, one must be cautious as the current can become stronger near certain areas. The tide conditions do not directly affect kitesurfing at this spot, but the width of the beach varies with the seasons: it is narrower in winter and wider in summer.
The recommended kite sizes depend on your weight and riding style. For men, prefer kites of 9 and 12 meters, while for women, kites of 7 and 9 meters are more suitable. These sizes allow for managing wind variations between morning (light) and afternoon (stronger). If you practice foiling, a smaller kite in the morning may be wise.
The wind regime at Bozo Beach is dominated by northeast trade winds, which blow very regularly and steadily. These trade winds are side-onshore, making for ideal kitesurfing conditions. The wind mainly comes from the northeast (NE) and east (E), with intensity varying throughout the day. The most stable conditions are found in the late afternoon, although the wind can become gusty in the center of the bay later in the day.
Cabarete enjoys a warm and humid tropical climate year-round. The water temperature ranges between 24 and 27°C depending on the season. Winter (November to April) is the wave season with cooler conditions, while summer (May to October) offers warmer water but fewer waves. The rainy season extends from May to November, peaking in September-October.
The depth at Playa Bozo is gradual with a sandy bottom that is very accessible. You can stand at a good distance from the shore, making the spot very safe for beginners. The reef located about a kilometer from the shore creates a wave zone but remains navigable. The depth increases gradually towards the open sea.
The water in Cabarete remains warm year-round. From June to August, the temperature reaches around 27°C, allowing for riding in just boardshorts with a rashguard for sun protection. From September to April, the water cools slightly to around 24-26°C, a shorty or boardshort with lycra may be necessary for riders sensitive to the cold.
