Buen Hombre

The beach of Playa Buen Hombre, located in Monte Cristi in the northwest of the Dominican Republic, is a peaceful fishing village. It is a popular spot for its shallow and flat turquoise water, perfect for progressing in kitesurfing.

It is easily accessible by car from Puerto Plata or Cabarete, with transfers organized by local schools. The atmosphere is authentic, away from the crowds, with part of the beach reserved for the kite school.

The regular trade wind blows directly from the sea, without turbulence, making it a reliable spot all year round.

The wind data shown here comes from ERA5 (via Open-Meteo) over 4 years, reprocessed to reflect realistic conditions.
👉 Average wind has been calibrated to avoid the usual underestimation of models.
👉 Gusts have been corrected by a median ratio to avoid unrealistic extreme values.
👉 Each day is summarized by the median wind (P50) observed during useful hours (8am–8pm), then classified into wind ranges.
👉 The weighted mode mixes average wind and gusts to best reflect felt wind.

  • 🟢 10–16 kts: light but sailable wind (especially on foil).
  • 🟡 16–22 kts: ideal range, comfortable conditions for most.
  • 🔴 22–28 kts: strong wind, reserved for experienced riders.
  • 🟣 28+ kts: extreme conditions, committed riding.

Riding conditions

The spot of Playa Buen Hombre offers a flat and shallow water surface for hundreds of meters, ideal for beginners and progression. The launch area is on a small sandy beach, often clear thanks to the kite school reserving a zone. Takeoff and landing are simple with side-on to side-shore wind from the NE, ENE, or E, which comes cleanly from the sea without touching land beforehand.

The riding area extends over a calm protected lagoon, with flat and shallow bottom where you can stand for a long time. At high tide, recommended for riding, the space is optimal without overly exposed areas. Be cautious of waves forming further out on the reef, suitable for experienced riders. Sessions often last 6-8 hours in the afternoon when the wind picks up to 20-30 knots.

Local feature: the spot is at an exposed point, windier than Cabarete by an average of 8 knots, with fewer gusts. Fishermen sometimes moor boats in the bay near the village, so navigate wide.

NW

Ideal conditions are with wind NE to E between 20-30 knots, side-on, at high tide to maximize the flat and shallow space.

Sea state

The water state is flat and butter-smooth in the lagoon, with shallow depth over a long distance. Waves form further out on the reef, suitable for advanced wave riding.

Sea currents

Currents are generally weak in the protected lagoon. At high tide, which is recommended, the water remains calm without strong notable currents. Near the village bay, fishing nets can create areas to avoid.

Recommended kite size

For a man, plan for kite sizes of 8 to 10m², and for a lighter woman 7 to 9-10m². One or two small kites are sufficient given the consistency and strength of the wind.

Weather & wind

The wind regime is dominated by constant trade winds coming from the NE, ENE, and E. More stable and stronger than in Cabarete, it picks up in strength in the afternoon, often 20-30+ knots in high season. Buen Hombre has the best winds in the Dominican Republic, with bases 8 knots higher than other spots.

Climate

The climate is tropical year-round with average air temperatures of 27-29°C. It is dry in the Monte Cristi region, except for late September-October when rains can disrupt the wind. The kite high season is in full swing from June to September, but strong winds start as early as late December and last until summer.

Depth

The depth is very gradual with a sandy and shallow bottom. You can stand for hundreds of meters, perfect for learning.

Water temperature

The water temperature is around 26-28°C year-round, no wetsuit needed.
