Humedal La Vega de Pupuya, in the municipality of Navidad in the O’Higgins region of Chile, is a kitesurf spot known for its wind and tide conditions. Located near La Vega de Pupuya beach, it offers a natural setting with wetlands and a nearby islet, popular among water sports enthusiasts.
It is a quiet place, ideal for combining kite sessions with walks or relaxation, in a sparsely urbanized coastal area. Locals appreciate its authenticity and proximity to the sea.
The spot attracts surfers and kiters due to its protected environment, although recreational activities are common.
The wind data shown here comes from ERA5 (via Open-Meteo) over 4 years, reprocessed to reflect realistic conditions.
👉 Average wind has been calibrated to avoid the usual underestimation of models.
👉 Gusts have been corrected by a median ratio to avoid unrealistic extreme values.
👉 Each day is summarized by the median wind (P50) observed during useful hours (8am–8pm), then classified into wind ranges.
👉 The weighted mode mixes average wind and gusts to best reflect felt wind.
The Humedal La Vega de Pupuya spot works well with side-on to side-shore winds coming from SW to W, typical of the central Chilean coast, sweeping the lagoon and adjacent beach for smooth navigation. The water entry is directly from the La Vega de Pupuya beach, wide and sandy, with a clear take-off area near the wetland moisture that helps keep the kite wet.
The water is generally flat to light chop in the main lagoon, protected from ocean waves, but be aware of tide variations that influence depth and access; at high tide, the area expands for more free navigation space. The best areas are in the center of the lagoon, away from the wet shores, with easy return to the beach thanks to the crosswind.
Local feature: the wind is enhanced by the surrounding plateaus that channel thermals, making afternoon sessions predictable; avoid areas close to the Pupuya islet where the wind can be more turbulent.
Ideal conditions are side-shore SW to W winds of 18 to 30 knots, stable and without excessive gusts, for a smooth session in the lagoon.
The water state is calm and flat in the protected lagoon, with a slight chop when the wind exceeds 25 knots. Waves are rare due to the natural barrier of the Pupuya islet, making the spot perfect for freeride or freestyle.
Currents are generally weak in the lagoon, influenced by the ocean tides that come in and out gently. At low tide, the flow can accelerate near the channels leading to the sea, but remains manageable for experienced riders.
Opt for 9 to 12 m² sizes in average winds of 20 knots, dropping to 7-9 m² when it blows over 25 knots.
The wind regime is regular due to local climatic conditions, with dominant directions from SW (236°) on average, reaching high forces like 20-40 knots in peak season. No specific local name, but it is a constant coastal wind, ideal for kitesurfing, particularly in the afternoon with thermals.
The climate of the O’Higgins region is of a coastal Mediterranean type, with hot and dry summers from December to March and mild and wet winters from June to August. Temperatures range between 10°C in winter and 25°C in summer, with strong wind exposure year-round.
The best months for kiting are from January to December according to high scores, thanks to a consistent wind favored by ocean proximity.
The depth is gradual with a sandy and muddy bottom in the wetland; you can stand up to about 50-100 meters from the shore, ideal for relaunches.
Water temperatures range from 12-14°C in winter (June-August) to 16-18°C in summer (December-March), requiring a full wetsuit year-round.
