Pontal de Maceio

At the majestic mouth of the Rio Jaguaribe, the largest river in Ceará, lies one of the most surprising and photogenic spots in the region: the Canto da Barra Lagoon in Fortim. This spot, still relatively confidential, is just a few minutes from the Pontal de Maceió village, where the river meets the ocean. The scenery is breathtaking: shifting sandbanks, golden dunes, coconut trees, and fishing boats. At high tide, the lagoon forms a vast mirror of flat water, perfectly sheltered, where kites glide in almost total silence. It’s a paradise for freestyle and progression, a place where you can ride at high tide until sunset in a magical atmosphere, far from all stress. When the tide goes down, the spot transforms into a labyrinth of islets and channels, fascinating to explore but requiring some knowledge of the terrain.

The wind data shown here comes from ERA5 (via Open-Meteo) over 4 years, reprocessed to reflect realistic conditions.
👉 Average wind has been calibrated to avoid the usual underestimation of models.
👉 Gusts have been corrected by a median ratio to avoid unrealistic extreme values.
👉 Each day is summarized by the median wind (P50) observed during useful hours (8am–8pm), then classified into wind ranges.
👉 The weighted mode mixes average wind and gusts to best reflect felt wind.

  • 🟢 10–16 kts: light but sailable wind (especially on foil).
  • 🟡 16–22 kts: ideal range, comfortable conditions for most.
  • 🔴 22–28 kts: strong wind, reserved for experienced riders.
  • 🟣 28+ kts: extreme conditions, committed riding.

Riding conditions

The Canto da Barra Lagoon offers a very different navigation experience from the neighboring sea. At high tide, the water becomes flat to ultra-flat, protected from chop by the sandbanks and the river's curvature. At low tide, the surface remains smooth, but some areas empty out: you then need to navigate in the center or in the deeper pools. The side-onshore wind from east to southeast, between 18 and 25 knots, arrives cleanly on the water, slightly channeled by the reliefs. The sandy bottom, soft and even, makes launching easy and falls harmless. It’s an ideal spot for freestyle, beginner/intermediate lessons, or riders who want to perfect their technique in a calm and beautiful environment. Schools from Fortim and Pontal often come here at high tide to train their students in dream conditions.

Wind from east to southeast, side-onshore, between 18 and 25 knots, clean and constant. This is the ideal wind for flat, freestyle, and beginner/intermediate lessons.

Sea state

High tide: ultra-flat water, smooth surface, perfect for freestyle. Medium tide: flat to slightly choppy in the center. Low tide: some areas become exposed, but there are still navigable pools near the main channel. It’s one of the most pleasant flat spots in Ceará, undoubtedly the most peaceful.

Sea currents

The lagoon is influenced by the tide and the river, but the current remains weak to moderate. At low tide, it may pull slightly towards the ocean, which is not dangerous if you stay in the inner part of the water body. Local riders know the area well and can read the sandbanks to always navigate in the safest zones.

Recommended kite size

Riders mainly use kites of 7 to 10 m². Lighter riders can go down to 6 m², while heavier ones can go up to 11 m². The consistency of the wind often allows for all-day navigation without changing size.

Weather & wind

The wind blows from east to southeast, side-onshore, between 18 and 25 knots, perfectly constant. It picks up around 10 AM, reaches its peak between 12 PM and 5 PM, then eases slightly. Thanks to the river's configuration, the wind maintains a rare laminar quality, ideal for precise freestyle and technical maneuvers.

Climate

The sun beats down all day, but the ocean breeze makes the heat bearable and the evenings pleasant. From July to January, the wind blows strong and the weather remains stable: constant 30°C, blue skies, powerful thermal wind. Even during the short rainy season (March–May), the spot remains navigable several days a week. In the evening, the sunset over the lagoon, with the sails reflecting in the golden water, offers an almost unreal atmosphere.

Depth

Between 0.4 and 1.5 meters depending on the tide. You can stand in most of the water body.

Water temperature

Between 27°C and 29°C all year round. Very pleasant brackish water, with no notable variation.
