Cumbuco

Located just 30 kilometers west of Fortaleza, Cumbuco is one of the birthplaces of kitesurfing in Brazil. This small fishing village turned resort has been attracting riders from around the world for years thanks to its constant wind, infinite beach, and perfect lagoons for training. The atmosphere is lively, cosmopolitan, sometimes a bit festive, but always focused on kiting. Along the coast, schools line up, colorful kites fill the sky, and beach bars welcome riders between sessions. Cumbuco is the spot for all levels: easily accessible, vast, and always windy. Whether for beginners, progressing, or going big in freestyle, everything is in place for spending entire days on the water.

The wind data shown here comes from ERA5 (via Open-Meteo) over 4 years, reprocessed to reflect realistic conditions.
👉 Average wind has been calibrated to avoid the usual underestimation of models.
👉 Gusts have been corrected by a median ratio to avoid unrealistic extreme values.
👉 Each day is summarized by the median wind (P50) observed during useful hours (8am–8pm), then classified into wind ranges.
👉 The weighted mode mixes average wind and gusts to best reflect felt wind.

  • 🟢 10–16 kts: light but sailable wind (especially on foil).
  • 🟡 16–22 kts: ideal range, comfortable conditions for most.
  • 🔴 22–28 kts: strong wind, reserved for experienced riders.
  • 🟣 28+ kts: extreme conditions, committed riding.

Riding conditions

Kiting at Cumbuco means enjoying a wind of almost outrageous regularity, with a water surface that changes its face according to desires. In front of the village, the sea is choppy but wide and clear, ideal for freeride. A few kilometers further, the legendary Lagoa de Cauipe offers a perfectly flat water mirror, framed by golden dunes — a dream playground for figure enthusiasts and freestyle pros. The launch is easy, and even in case of a crash, the side-on wind naturally brings you back to the beach. At low tide, the sea gently retreats, leaving a large area of shallow depth, perfect for beginners. At high tide, the waves become more pronounced, ideal for trying out surfkiting. The local schools ensure safety, and the area is very well frequented: you always kite surrounded, but without getting in each other's way as the beach is vast.

The perfect wind for Cumbuco blows from east to southeast, side-onshore, steady and warm. This guarantees comfortable, safe, and predictable navigation. The power gradually increases throughout the day, allowing you to choose your kite size with complete peace of mind.

Sea state

At sea, there is a slight constant chop, sometimes with waves of 0.5 to 1 meter depending on the tide. In the Lagoa de Cauipe, the water is completely flat at high tide, a bit more irregular when the level drops.

Sea currents

Currents are weak to moderate, oriented towards the west. They do not affect navigation in the main area and are largely compensated by the side-on wind. No particular danger to report, even for beginners.

Recommended kite size

The majority of riders kite between 7 and 10 m². Lighter riders often choose a 6–8 m², while heavier ones go for a 9–11 m². The wind being very stable, you can keep the same kite all day without any problem.

Weather & wind

The sky is almost always blue, the heat constant, and rain rare. The days are similar: clear sun, dry air, and stable temperature around 30°C. The wind blows with an impressive regularity from August to December, mainly from east to southeast. It starts gently in the late morning, strengthens between noon and 5 PM, reaching 18 to 26 knots most days. The sky remains clear, the sun omnipresent, and the conditions almost identical day after day. Cumbuco is undoubtedly one of the most consistent spots in the world.

Climate

The climate is tropical dry, warm all year round, with very little rain between July and January. The average air temperature ranges from 28 to 33°C, and even in the evening, it never gets cold. Humidity remains moderate thanks to the constant wind from the Atlantic. Outside the windy season, the days are calmer but always sunny.

Depth

At sea, the depth varies from 0.5 to 2 meters in the first 50 meters, with a sandy bottom. In the Lagoa de Cauipe, you can stand almost everywhere.

Water temperature

Always warm, between 27 and 29°C all year round. No wetsuit needed, a simple lycra is enough to protect from the sun.
