Altona

Altona Beach, located on the west shore of Port Phillip Bay in Victoria, is a popular spot for kiteboarders due to its flat water and accessibility from Melbourne. About thirty minutes from the city center, it attracts locals and visitors seeking quiet sessions in the sheltered bay.

The spot is near Apex Park and runs along the esplanade, with a dedicated wind sports area shared between kiting and other activities. It is a convenient place for intermediate riders and above, especially in the afternoon when the sea breeze picks up.

Altona offers an urban coastal setting with wide beaches, but the launch space is limited due to the proximity of homes and obstacles.

Detailed information

The Altona Beach spot works well with winds from E, ESE, SE, SSE, S, SSW, SW, which are generally onshore or side-on relative to the north-facing beach. The riding area is marked in the western part, from the eastern end of Apex Park eastward along the esplanade for several hundred meters; it is a shared zone with other wind sports.

Launching is done directly from the sandy beach, but space is limited with bushes, trees, houses, and power lines nearby, so assistance is mandatory for launching and landing. The water surface is mainly flat and shallow, with some chop or small waves in strong winds; absolutely avoid east of the Altona pier where kiting is prohibited.

In Port Phillip Bay, conditions remain stable due to the shelter, ideal for freestyle or freeride on flat water. Tides have little influence on the spot, but always check the markers of the authorized area to stay safe.
