Altona

Altona Beach, located on the west shore of Port Phillip Bay in Victoria, is a popular spot for kiteboarders due to its flat water and accessibility from Melbourne. About thirty minutes from the city center, it attracts locals and visitors seeking quiet sessions in the sheltered bay.

The spot is near Apex Park and runs along the esplanade, with a dedicated wind sports area shared between kiting and other activities. It is a convenient place for intermediate riders and above, especially in the afternoon when the sea breeze picks up.

Altona offers an urban coastal setting with wide beaches, but the launch space is limited due to the proximity of homes and obstacles.

The wind data shown here comes from ERA5 (via Open-Meteo) over 4 years, reprocessed to reflect realistic conditions.
👉 Average wind has been calibrated to avoid the usual underestimation of models.
👉 Gusts have been corrected by a median ratio to avoid unrealistic extreme values.
👉 Each day is summarized by the median wind (P50) observed during useful hours (8am–8pm), then classified into wind ranges.
👉 The weighted mode mixes average wind and gusts to best reflect felt wind.

  • 🟢 10–16 kts: light but sailable wind (especially on foil).
  • 🟡 16–22 kts: ideal range, comfortable conditions for most.
  • 🔴 22–28 kts: strong wind, reserved for experienced riders.
  • 🟣 28+ kts: extreme conditions, committed riding.

Riding conditions

The Altona Beach spot works well with winds from E, ESE, SE, SSE, S, SSW, SW, which are generally onshore or side-on relative to the north-facing beach. The riding area is marked in the western part, from the eastern end of Apex Park eastward along the esplanade for several hundred meters; it is a shared zone with other wind sports.

Launching is done directly from the sandy beach, but space is limited with bushes, trees, houses, and power lines nearby, so assistance is mandatory for launching and landing. The water surface is mainly flat and shallow, with some chop or small waves in strong winds; absolutely avoid east of the Altona pier where kiting is prohibited.

In Port Phillip Bay, conditions remain stable due to the shelter, ideal for freestyle or freeride on flat water. Tides have little influence on the spot, but always check the markers of the authorized area to stay safe.

Ideal wind
SEdominant
Sdominant
SWdominant

Ideal conditions are SE to SW onshore winds between 15-25 knots, for a flat and rideable water surface without risking going out of the area.

Sea state

The water surface is mostly flat and shallow, perfect for progression, with light chop in sustained winds or occasional small waves. Ideal for kiting in shallow water near the shore.

Sea currents

Currents in Port Phillip Bay are generally weak at Altona, thanks to the natural shelter. Tides are moderate with a range of about 1-2 meters, having no major impact on navigation.

Stay vigilant near the pier where the flow can accelerate slightly.

Recommended kite size

Opt for kite sizes of 9 to 12 m² in typical conditions of 12-20 knots; drop to 7-9 m² in strong breezes of 20+ knots.

Weather & wind

Typical winds at Altona come from the east or southeast in the morning, then shift to onshore southwest in the afternoon due to the sea breeze. Strengths vary from 10-25 knots on average during the season, making the spot reliable several days a week in summer.

No specific local name, but the bay breeze is expected regularly from October to April.

Climate

The climate around Altona Beach is temperate oceanic, with mild summers of 20-25°C in January-February and cool winters around 10-15°C in July-August. Rainfall is spread throughout the year, but summer months offer more stability for sessions.

The proximity to Melbourne makes the spot accessible year-round, although winds are more reliable from spring to autumn.

Depth

The bottom is sandy and shallow, with possible foot depth near the shore; depth increases gradually beyond the riding area.

Water temperature

Water temperatures range from 12-15°C in winter (June-August) to 18-22°C in summer (December-February) in Port Phillip Bay.
