The La Prairie beach, located about 4 km east of Le Morne on the southwest coast of Mauritius, offers a vast and flat lagoon. It is a popular spot for its shallow water that is well-suited for kitesurfing.
The beach is spacious, making it easy to launch and land kites. Riders find a calm setting, away from the hustle and bustle of the nearby Morne.
This site is part of the larger lagoon of Le Morne, with a relaxed atmosphere and conditions suitable for different levels.
The wind data shown here comes from ERA5 (via Open-Meteo) over 4 years, reprocessed to reflect realistic conditions.
👉 Average wind has been calibrated to avoid the usual underestimation of models.
👉 Gusts have been corrected by a median ratio to avoid unrealistic extreme values.
👉 Each day is summarized by the median wind (P50) observed during useful hours (8am–8pm), then classified into wind ranges.
👉 The weighted mode mixes average wind and gusts to best reflect felt wind.
The La Prairie spot is the upwind part of the Le Morne lagoon, facing the prevailing winds from southeast, which come in onshore or side-on depending on the intensity. The water entry is directly from the sandy beach, wide and obstacle-free, with a comfortable launch area even in strong winds. The navigation area is immense, flat, and shallow for hundreds of meters, ideal for freeride, freestyle, or learning, without the need to leave the lagoon. Tides have little influence on the water surface which remains flat at all times, but at low tide, the water is even shallower, perfect for beginners who can stand for a long time. Be careful to stay in the clear areas and avoid the darker patches near the reef where the water can be more choppy. It is an upwind spot compared to Morne, so you can easily ride down to more advanced areas like One Eye if you wish, but it is self-sufficient for a complete session. Conditions are stable year-round, but optimal from June to October with consistent winds.
Ideal conditions are a southeast wind between 15 and 25 knots, stable and onshore, for a perfect flat water surface and consistent power.
The water surface is remarkably flat and smooth, thanks to the protection of the reef, with turquoise and shallow water. There are few waves in the lagoon, even in strong winds, making it a true paradise for flat water.
Currents are generally weak in the La Prairie lagoon, but they can strengthen near the channels and the outer reef. Always observe the sea before launching to avoid being swept out to sea.
For winds of 15-25 knots, plan for kites between 9 and 12 m² for beginners and intermediates, and 7 to 10 m² for more experienced riders or in gusts.
The prevailing wind comes from the southeast, often constant and reliable, blowing 300 days a year in the region. It accelerates as it passes the tip of Morne, typically offering sessions of 15 to 25 knots, with stronger gusts in the dry season.
The climate at La Prairie is tropical, with warm temperatures year-round averaging between 25 and 30°C. The austral winter from May to October is the dry and windy season, while summer from November to April is wetter with occasional showers but still navigable.
The depth is very shallow with a mostly sandy bottom, and you can stand 100 to 200 meters from the shore depending on the tide. The lagoon remains shallow even at high tide.
The water is warm year-round, around 24-26°C in winter and 28-30°C in summer, a shorty lycra is usually sufficient.
