Long Bay

Long Bay Beach, in the parish of Portland in Jamaica, is a long open beach known for its simple atmosphere and natural setting. It is a popular spot for its accessible waves and its quieter side compared to the heavily frequented beaches of the island.

The beach of Long Bay offers an interesting playground for kitesurfing when the wind is well oriented. The water conditions change quickly depending on the swell and the state of the sea, with a more exposed area towards the north of the bay.

Localização

Informações detalhadas

The spot mainly works with a side-shore to side-on wind depending on the day's orientation, as the bay is exposed on the northeast coast. The bottom is primarily sandy near the shore, but the presence of reefs offshore requires attention to the navigation axis and potential drift.

Launching is done from the beach, which has a gentle slope and is fairly easy to access. The launch area must remain clear, as the beach is not very wide everywhere and some areas are occupied by vegetation, local access, and some seaside activities.

The water remains cleaner near the shore when the sea is calm, but it can become more agitated when the swell enters the bay. It is advisable to prioritize navigation close to the beach in the most readable area, then keep a margin as one approaches sectors where the bottom rises or where the waves grow.

This spot is especially interesting for self-sufficient riders who know how to manage a launch and return in an exposed area. Conditions become more technical if the wind is irregular, if the swell rises, or if the lateral current strengthens.

  • The beach does not have permanent supervision, so one must remain self-sufficient.
