The Lachanau beach, located by the Hourtin lake in Nouvelle-Aquitaine, is a quiet spot surrounded by pine trees. It is easily accessible on foot via a soft needle carpet, away from the crowded monitored beach in summer. It is an ideal place for kiters, with a calm atmosphere and a school on site.
The Hourtin lake, one of the largest in France with its 5700 hectares, offers a safe space for sailing. Locals appreciate this spot for its shallow fresh water and regular breeze, perfect for progressing without the ocean waves.
Less than 3 km from the center of Hourtin, there are restaurants and bike rides nearby to complete the session.

The spot at Lachanau beach is oriented for an effective side-shore wind from the south to southwest, whether thermal or depression. The launch is directly from the reserved kite beach, with a wide and obstacle-free take-off area thanks to the pine trees in the background. The navigation area is smaller than at the Hourtin port but perfectly suited, with a calm water surface without tides since it is a fresh water lake.
You can stand for a long time due to the shallow depth, even more than 100 meters from the shore, making the spot ideal for waterstarts and jibes. The Hourtin Kiteschool is on site to guide the sessions, and the breeze often picks up in the afternoon during the season. Be careful to stay in the dedicated area to avoid bathers in summer, even though it is away from the main beach.
The bottom is clean and sandy, without seagrass or rocks, for a smooth glide. The best sessions occur with a side-on wind from the south, which slightly digs the water surface without making it choppy.
