The Petit Nice beach, located in La Teste-de-Buch in Nouvelle-Aquitaine, is the first ocean beach after the Dune du Pilat. It is a large fine sandy beach away from the city, facing the Banc d'Arguin, offering a remarkable natural setting bordered by the La Teste state forest.
It is a spot appreciated by beginners in kitesurfing who prefer to stay away from the waves. The beach has full facilities: restaurants, snacks, picnic area, free parking, and easy access for people with reduced mobility. A first aid station is open during the summer, and the beach is certified as handi-beach.
The wind data shown here comes from ERA5 (via Open-Meteo) over 4 years, reprocessed to reflect realistic conditions.
👉 Average wind has been calibrated to avoid the usual underestimation of models.
👉 Gusts have been corrected by a median ratio to avoid unrealistic extreme values.
👉 Each day is summarized by the median wind (P50) observed during useful hours (8am–8pm), then classified into wind ranges.
👉 The weighted mode mixes average wind and gusts to best reflect felt wind.
Petit Nice offers ideal conditions for beginners thanks to its protected and shallow water surface. At low tide, the sandbanks form a lagoon with calm and flat waters, perfect for progressing safely. At high tide, the water surface becomes choppier with stronger currents, making navigation more technical for experienced riders.
Launching is easy from the wide sandy beach. The spot is oriented facing the Atlantic Ocean, which means that winds from the west to northwest generally arrive in side-shore to side-on, offering stable conditions. East to southeast winds are rarer and less favorable.
There is no marked swimming area due to the material impossibility of anchoring buoys. The launch area is well defined and secured. Pay special attention to the baïnes (pools of water separated from the ocean by a sandbank) that empty at low tide, creating strong currents seaward.
The ideal conditions occur with winds of 12 to 18 knots coming from the west to northwest, arriving in side-shore to side-on relative to the beach. These conditions offer maximum stability and optimal progression for beginners. Southwest winds are also usable but less regular. The best periods are autumn and winter, although the spot is usable year-round.
At low tide, the water surface is very flat with calm waters forming a true lagoon. This is the ideal condition for beginners and flat water enthusiasts. At high tide, the water surface becomes choppy with a more agitated texture, offering more sensations for intermediate riders. The waves of the Atlantic Ocean generally do not reach the main practice area, except in case of strong swell.
The general current is generally weak at Petit Nice, making it a safe spot for beginners. However, one must be vigilant near the baïnes where the current can become very strong, especially at low tide. The Banc d'Arguin, located in front of the beach, slightly influences the local currents but does not pose a major problem with a good knowledge of the spot.
For a beginner rider, kites of 12 to 14 m² are recommended in medium wind conditions (12-15 knots). With stronger winds (15-20 knots), a kite of 9 to 11 m² will be more appropriate. For experienced riders looking for flat water, kites of 7 to 9 m² will allow for better maneuverability. Always adjust the size according to the tide and wind conditions of the day.
The dominant wind regime comes from the west to northwest, bringing regular and predictable conditions. These Atlantic winds are generally moderate to strong, particularly in autumn and winter. The spot can also receive winds from the southwest, less frequent but equally usable. East winds are rare and generally weak.
The climate of the Aquitaine coast is temperate oceanic. Winters are mild with average temperatures around 8-10°C, while summers are pleasant with temperatures around 20-22°C. The spot benefits from stable weather conditions throughout the year, with regular wind activity particularly in autumn and winter.
The depth at Petit Nice is gradual with a sandy bottom, making it a very safe spot. You can stand easily up to 50 meters from the shore at low tide. At high tide, the depth increases but remains gradual. The sandy bottom offers excellent traction and absorbs energy well, reducing risks in case of a fall.
The water of the Atlantic Ocean at La Teste-de-Buch is cold in winter with temperatures around 8-10°C (December to February), requiring a 5/4 mm wetsuit. In spring (March to May), the water gradually warms up to 12-15°C. In summer (June to August), temperatures reach 17-20°C, allowing for a lighter wetsuit or a shorty. In autumn (September to November), the water gradually cools from 18°C to 12°C.
